RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (August 30, 2020)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Our pop plates are looking yummy again, so let’s see what’s hot at the musical market this week:

A STYLISH END TO THE MONTH: Harry Styles remains at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart with “Watermelon Sugar”, scoring a fifth sweet week at the top. The single is more than 2,800 spins ahead of the song in the #2 spot, Lewis Capaldi‘s “Before You Go”, which advances from #4. Meanwhile, “Watermelon” holds at #5 on the Hot AC chart, as it also looks to capture the top spot there.

The viral hit “Mood” puts the Top 40 panel in a great mood, as 24KGoldn and Iann Dior fly into the top 40 at #37 this week. This marks the first top 40 entry for either artist at the format. Additionally, Drake leaps from 46-39 with the Lil Durk-assisted “Laugh Now Cry Later”, giving the two performers their 31st and first top 40 hits, respectively. The collaboration lifts into the top 15 on both the Rhythmic and Urban radio charts this week.

In the top 50, Calvin Harris and The Weeknd debut at #47 with “Over Now”, while Zara Larsson‘s “Wow” steps in at #48. The former impacts at the format on Tuesday, while the latter has been accumulating adds for several weeks now.

RADIO REPORT: What’s Popping At Top 40 Radio This Week (August 24-25, 2020)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are three titles impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

BTS – “Dynamite” (BigHit/Columbia)
Album: TBA (2020)
Past T40 History: The popular K-pop band just earned their sixth top 40 song at the format, which now sits just below the top 30.

DIXIE D’AMELIO – “Be Happy” (Dam Fam/HITCO)
Album: TBA (2020)
Past T40 History: D’Amelio should be really happy, in fact, as this is the TikTok star’s first single to ever impact at a radio format.

JXDN – “Angels & Demons” (DTA/EMG)
Album: TBA (2020)
Past T40 History: Another notable TikTok user is impacting here this week. On Alternative radio, “So What!” is new to the top 50.

Next week, BLACKPINK is in your area and serving some “Ice Cream” (and a bit of adds action) with Selena Gomez.

How will these songs perform on the adds report? Let me know!

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (August 23, 2020)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. The pop chart is looking pretty explosive, so let’s see what’s sparking up at the format this week:

STILL IN STYLES: Harry Styles remains at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart for a fourth week with “Watermelon Sugar”, now more than 3,300 spins ahead of Dua Lipa‘s former chart-topper “Break My Heart” in the runner-up spot. The giant hit is ready for a fifth week at the top, as it continues to climb through the top five at Hot AC radio.

Two songs jump into the top 40 this week: Miley Cyrus bolts from 41-28 with her 13th top 40 single at the format, “Midnight Sky”. Meanwhile, K-pop septet BTS launches at #32 with “Dynamite”, their sixth top 40 entry to date. The tune recently broke a YouTube record when its music video scored just over 101 million views in its first day alone. It impacts at the pop format on Tuesday and will most likely finish as the Most Added song on the report.

In the top 50, Drake debuts at #46 with the Lil Durk-assisted “Laugh Now Cry Later”, while Dan + Shay‘s “I Should Probably Go To Bed” comes in at #48. The former song is about halfway up the chart on both the Rhythmic and Urban formats, while the latter is cruising through the 20’s on both the Country and Hot AC lists.
