RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (October 14, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Let’s what’s under down under the top spot, as a certain Aussie quartet maintains their grip on the top spot this week. Time to see what’s popping this Sunday:

SUMMER IN THE FALL: This week marks a bittersweet one at the format, as “Youngblood” by the Australian act 5 Seconds Of Summer holds at #1 for the third week. The band’s label, Capitol, which should be celebrating another great result this weekend, is now mourning the loss of Joe Rainey, their SVP of pop promotion. He was 43. Rainey was involved in campaigns that led to #1 titles at the format for acts like Katy Perry, Niall Horan and Sam Smith, as well as top five or ten hits for many others. He’ll certainly be missed. Several members of 5 Seconds Of Summer have already expressed their condolences over social media.

With the whole top five unbulleted, the next likely #1 here will be Ariana Grande‘s “God Is A Woman”, which is at #6 for the third week. Will it power up and bolt from 6-1 next week? It’s anyone’s guess, so stay tuned.

MORE THAN A “FEELING”: Three new songs launch into the top 40 this week, led by Halsey‘s “Without Me”, leaping from 47-30. It becomes her ninth top 40 hit at the format; her eighth, a collaboration with Benny Blanco titled “Eastside”, is now at #13. A move of 42-37 for “This Feeling” gives the duo The Chainsmokers their tenth top 40 single, three of which have come this year. It also marks the first top 40 hit on the pop chart for young country performer Kelsea Ballerini, who impacts tomorrow as her usual home with a new solo single called “Miss Me More”. Lastly, “I Love It” climbs from 44-39 for Kanye West and Lil Pump, with the former performer receiving his 22nd top 40 entry at the format and the latter scoring his first. (Lil Pump’s viral hit “Gucci Gang” got to #46 in January, though it charted higher elsewhere.)

Leading three top 50 entries on the chart, “Don’t Matter To Me” from Drake and the late Michael Jackson climbs aboard at #43. The latest hit to chart from Drake’s former #1 album Scorpion could become Jackson’s third posthumous top 40 entry since 2010. A notch lower, the duo Twenty One Pilots flies the friendly skies into the airspace at #44 with “My Blood”. Their current hit is likely to become their fourth top 40 entry in the coming weeks, putting them one track ahead of Stone Temple Pilots and their string of three between 1993 and 1994. The last of the three new songs, in at #49, is “Trust My Lonely” from Alessia Cara. It’s the follow-up to “Growing Pains”, a #12 hit from a few months back. Both singles are taken from The Pains Of Growing, due later this year.
