RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (October 13, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. As Columbus Day comes around again, let’s sail the ocean blue for hit records and all the stats you need from the charts. Here’s what’s popping at the Top 40 format this week:

IT KEEPS RIGHT ON A-HURTIN’: Lizzo‘s “Truth Hurts” narrowly earns a fourth week at #1 on the Top 40 radio list, landing a mere 16 spins ahead of the song at #2: the former chart-topper “Señorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. Lizzo’s smash is also back up a notch to #4 on the Rhythmic chart and leaps from 7-5 at Urban radio. This will almost certainly be the final week at #1 for the single here on the pop radio chart, but for just her second chart entry ever, it was a giant breakthrough. Look for “Good As Hell” to continue to perform here through the holidays.

Four new tunes enter the top 40 on this week’s chart. The highest, debuting on the entire chart at #30, is “10,000 Hours” by the duo Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber, who earn their third and 26th top 40 entries, respectively. This collaboration is now in the top 40 at three radio formats, with both Country and Hot AC programmers showing the song some love in the last couple of weeks. Making a move from 42-32, it’s “Lonely” by Diplo and the Jonas Brothers. Their collaboration marks the sixth solo appearance in the top 40 for Diplo and the tenth for the trio, four of which have come this year. Billie Eilish checks in at #37 with “All The Good Girls Go To Hell”, her third top 40 entry to date. It’s also in the top 20 on the latest Alternative chart update, where the singer has scored two #1 singles this year. Finishing things up with a small rise from 43-40, Lauv and Anne-Marie each score their fifth top 40 hits with “F**k, I’m Lonely”, taken from the soundtrack to the third season of 13 Reasons Why. Lauv is continuing to put out new tracks from his forthcoming album ~how i’m feeling~, a set on which this single also appears, due March 6.

Things aren’t nearly as exciting in the top 50 this week, but one of this coming Tuesday’s impacting songs breaks in at #45. “Writing On The Wall” is the new hit by French Montana, which also features Post Malone, Cardi B and Rvssian. Four spots lower, the DJ Snake, J Balvin and Tyga collaboration called “Loco Contigo” checks in at #49. The tune has never had an official impact date at the format, though it’s been steadily accumulating a handful of adds each week for some time now.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (December 4, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: we break it down with two former chart-toppers at the format on that trip to the top of the adds report that we do every Tuesday. So, let’s add ’em up:

NOTHING BREAKS LIKE A CHART: After a top five debut on iTunes and plenty of early radio action, “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart” scores big this week for Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus, picking up 82 stations on impact. The song will be featured on a forthcoming album by Ronson, due sometime in 2019. No other track comes close to that total on the latest update, but another hit that’s impacting this week finishes in the runner-up position with 25 new stations. The latest crossover track from R&B singer Ella Mai is “Trip”, which recently reached #1 on the Urban chart and remains in the top five on the Rhythmic chart. Otherwise, most of the songs in the top ten this week are repeat titles and/or already established hits trying to close out the panel.

Next week is anyone’s guess, as no prominent titles are currently scheduled to impact. Stay tuned for more information.

1. MARK RONSON featuring MILEY CYRUS, “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart” (RCA)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (November 27, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Brrrr! The numbers are very chilly, as radio prepares for the annual freeze for the holidays. Let’s add ’em up:

SO “CLOSE” TO CHRISTMAS: With the Thanksgiving holiday having just passed, it’s no surprise to see that most reporters on the pop panel didn’t post any (or as many) adds this Tuesday. As a result, it was mostly established singles out in front, with “Close To Me” by Ellie Goulding x Diplo featuring Swae Lee collecting 20 adds and the top position. Ariana Grande followed in the runner-up position with another 16 adds for “Thank U, Next”. You can find the rest of the significant titles (and ties) below.

Next week, the top ten should look more lively with continued add support for “1999”, the current collaboration from Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, as well as “Trip”, the potential second top 40 single for Ella Mai. Who else is due for a solid impact week? Find out soon.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN

6-T. BENNY BLANCO & CALVIN HARRIS, “I Found You” (Columbia-Interscope)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (November 20, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Thanksgiving is on the brain, and so is one very thankful hit song. Time to add ’em up:

“U” CAN’T STOP HER: For the second consecutive week, Ariana Grande‘s “Thank U, Next” leads the pack at Top 40 radio, as it comes in with another 49 stations. After making a huge move from 39-20 on last Sunday’s published update, the big song should continue towards the top, as it remains active at the major sales and streaming services.

For impacting titles, “No Candle No Light” by ZAYN featuring Nicki Minaj leads the way with 30 stations, taking second place in the weekly report, with “Hurts Like Hell” by Madison Beer featuring Offset securing 28 stations and a third place finish.

Next week, watch out for Bad Bunny‘s “MIA”, featuring Drake, a top ten Rhythmic single which should hop onto the adds report at this format with ease. Have a great Thanksgiving!

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. ARIANA GRANDE, “Thank U, Next” (Republic)
2. ZAYN featuring NICKI MINAJ, “No Candle No Light” (RCA)

4. ELLIE GOULDING x DIPLO featuring SWAE LEE, “Close To Me” (Interscope)
5. DJ SNAKE featuring SELENA GOMEZ, OZUNA & CARDI B, “Taki Taki” (Geffen/Interscope)
6. THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring KELSEA BALLERINI, “This Feeling” (Disruptor/Columbia)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (November 13, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: we say our thanks for Ariana Grande‘s new single before we settle down for Thanksgiving, but we’re absolutely thankful for plenty of titles in the top ten. Time to add ’em up:

THE “NEXT” BEST THING: After a good start at the format last Tuesday and some bigger sales and streaming gains in the past few days, Grande’s “Thank U, Next” performs very well on this week’s Top 40 adds report, scoring 82 new stations. On Sunday, the song became Grande’s 19th top 40 hit at the format since her debut in 2013, which comes at the same time that “God Is A Woman” is leading the survey and “Breathin” is gaining nicely in the top ten. “Thank”, which is the title cut from her forthcoming set, has all sorts of chart action on Apple Music, iTunes and Spotify, breaking several streaming records in the process recently. As for the Top 40 format, you can probably expect “Thank” at the summit sometime early next year, unless it speeds up before the holidays.

An impacting release of note is by Benny Blanco and Calvin Harris with “I Found You”, which checks in with 26 stations and a second place finish. Blanco’s single “Eastside” (with Halsey and Khalid) recently entered the top ten at the format, while Harris’s single “Promises” (with Sam Smith) just made the top 20. Both songs appear to be winding down, so “Found” will probably enter the top 50 quite easily by the end of this or next week. No word on if an EP or album from Blanco will be surfacing anytime soon.

Elsewhere, look for new hits by Ava Max, Zara Larsson and others to continue their fast ascent at the format as the fall rolls on.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. ARIANA GRANDE, “Thank U, Next” (Republic)
2. BENNY BLANCO & CALVIN HARRIS, “I Found You” (Columbia-Interscope)
3. AVA MAX, “Sweet But Psycho” (APG/Atlantic)
4. THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring KELSEA BALLERINI, “This Feeling” (Disruptor/Columbia)
5. ELLIE GOULDING x DIPLO featuring SWAE LEE, “Close To Me” (Interscope)
6-T. KHALID, “Better” (Right Hand/RCA)
6-T. ZARA LARSSON, “Ruin My Life” (TEN/Epic)
8. DJ SNAKE featuring SELENA GOMEZ, OZUNA & CARDI B, “Taki Taki” (Geffen/Interscope)
9-T. LADY GAGA & BRADLEY COOPER, “Shallow” (Interscope)
9-T. LAUV featuring JULIA MICHAELS, “There’s No Way” (Kobalt/AWAL/in2une)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (November 6, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: we cast our votes for the top pop candidates, including a hot new single by Ariana Grande and several buzzing collaborations from last week’s list. Time to fill in your ballot and add ’em up:

WHO’S “NEXT”: For those of you hoping the last-minute addition of “Thank U, Next” from Grande to the schedule would be the end of Ellie Goulding‘s chances at the Most Added record at the format, I’m afraid it wasn’t meant to be this Tuesday. Goulding’s collaboration with Diplo featuring Swae Lee, titled “Close To Me”, led with 41 new stations during the session, as “Thank” begins in the runner-up position with 27 adds. (Don’t worry, it will likely have a greater sum next week.) “Close” should have enough adds to approach or break into the top 40 at the format by this weekend, while Grande is most likely to have a smaller climb into the top 50. Rounding out the top three, “Taki Taki” by DJ Snake featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B scores an additional 22 stations this week. It’s already leaping through the 30’s and will continue to gain nicely.

Further down, Jack & Jack‘s new single “No One Compares To You” starts modestly at 16 stations, good for eighth place. The two guys have a pair of minor top 40 entries to date, with neither reaching the top 20. We’ll see if this one can be their first.

Next week, look for Benny Blanco‘s collaboration with Calvin Harris, “I Found You”, to find some excellent results here.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. ELLIE GOULDING x DIPLO featuring SWAE LEE, “Close To Me” (Interscope)
2. ARIANA GRANDE, “Thank U, Next” (Republic)
3. DJ SNAKE featuring SELENA GOMEZ, OZUNA & CARDI B, “Taki Taki” (Geffen/Interscope)
4. ZARA LARSSON, “Ruin My Life” (TEN/Epic)
5-T. CAMILA CABELLO, “Consequences” (Syco/Epic)
5-T. KHALID, “Better” (Right Hand/RCA)
7. POST MALONE & SWAE LEE, “Sunflower” (Interscope-Republic)
8. JACK & JACK, “No One Compares To You” (Island/Republic)
9. WHY DON’T WE, “8 Letters” (Signature Ent./Atlantic)
10. PANIC! AT THE DISCO, “High Hopes” (Fueled By Ramen/RRP)
