Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: DJ Khaled enlists Rihanna and Bryson Tiller for a “wild” song, and it challenges Calvin Harris‘s touchy feely new single with Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean. Gee, save some feature slots for someone else’s collaboration, will you? Anyways, let’s see what’s going down on Add Lib featuring Most Added Songs, Lots Of Chart Stats and Plenty Of Bad Puns:
“WILD” AND CRAZY KIDS: It’s anotha (number) one for yelling enthusiast DJ Khaled and his current hit from Grateful. The song is called “Wild Thoughts”, and it scores 115 stations on impact, making it the Most Added record at the CHR/Top 40 format. It also earns the Most Added title on this week’s CHR/Rhythmic and Urban add reports, posting 50 and 49 new stations, respectively. Of course, Rihanna and Bryson Tiller provide the non-screaming vocals on this song, which hit #2 on iTunes upon release. This is the follow-up to “I’m The One”, which is still going strong in the top five on the pop chart. (We’ll see if “Wild” affects it in the next few weeks.) If you think you’ve heard this single before, it might be because it heavily samples “Maria Maria” by Santana featuring The Product G&B, the Grammy-winning Supernatural hit that spent four weeks at #2 (3/31-4/21/00 R&R) at the format. Oh, to be ten again… in any case, look for “Wild” to be a huge multi-format success all summer long. That Rihanna reign just won’t let up!
“FEELS” LIKE A WINNER: Harris, Williams, Perry & Sean sounds like it might be one of those terrible law firms from the land of daytime TV, but it’s actually Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean coming together for a new hit off Harris’ forthcoming album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1. “Feels” feels like a great collaboration for the format, and it has a stellar first week too, taking in 104 adds on impact. Along with “Wild Thoughts” above, eight of the top ten Most Added songs this week include a featured artist or are performed by multiple artists, which speaks to the continued support and success of these types of tracks. In time, however, this could result in some backlash toward the concept. We’ll just have to see what happens later this year. Next week should bring an additional collaboration into the top ten, from Machine Gun Kelly and James Arthur, while the song in the #7 spot this week, by Macklemore and Skylar Grey, should repeat its top ten status when it officially impacts at the format.
