RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 23, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. There’s a chill in the fall air, but the hot hits on the pop airwaves are keeping things nice and toasty. Here’s what’s popping this Sunday:

SHOW ME “LOVE”: This is the second week at the top for “Love Lies” from Khalid x Normani, a song which has now spent half a year in the top 40. The soundtrack cut from Love, Simon is unbulleted on the newest update and it’s not clear if it’ll receive another week at the top. With that being said, watch out for “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds Of Summer, up to #4 on the new update, which is charging ahead and will likely be the next chart-topper at the format. It’s also the larger Hot AC hit of the two songs: “Youngblood” is now at #9, climbing a notch, while “Love” slides back one notch to #23. Regardless of happens next week, it’s been a solid run for the collaboration at the top spot and should provide a nice launching pad for Normani’s first pop smash completely on her own.

DAN ON YOUR MIND: While reactive tunes from LSD, Silk City & Dua Lipa and Travis Scott reach the top 40, one recurrent and some additional purging fills the lower rungs of the top 50 with a handful of debuts. Out in front, country duo Dan + Shay is on well on its way to their first pop hit with “Tequila”, bowing at #45. The two guys have accumulated seven top 40 singles at their usual format since 2013, with this release landing at the top earlier this year. Just behind them, the new collaboration from David Guetta and Anne-Marie checks in at #46, “Don’t Leave Me Alone”. Both performers are currently in the top 40 with other singles: Guetta’s at #27 this week sharing the lead billing with Jason Derulo on “Goodbye”, while Anne-Marie can be found at #29 with “2002”.

The other debuts in the top 50 this week are not receiving a whole lot of airplay, and it’s doubtful that they’ll stick around for long. At #49, “IDWK” (short for “I don’t want (to) know”) is the first charting collaboration for DVBBS and Blackbear, which is midway up the Top 40 chart in the DVBBS’s native Canada. Blackbear got as high as #24 late last year with “Do Re Mi”. One notch lower, “FeFe” gives controversial performer 6ix9ine his first chart entry at the format, a song which also features Nicki Minaj. It’s now at #10 on this week’s Rhythmic chart, and just outside the region on the updated Urban list. Will it get higher than #50 here? Stay tuned.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (September 18, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: take a breather with Ariana Grande‘s latest hit, as well as new tracks by a plethora of pop performers. The action is on, so let’s add ’em up:

NOW WITH ADDED SWEETENER: Just before Yom Kippur begins and we fast for the day, the Top 40 panel is dining on lots of sweet treats with a pop punch. Leading the way, “Breathin” from the aforementioned Grande takes the air right out of our lungs, but in a good way, landing at the top of this week’s report with 43 stations on impact. The song edged into the #40 position on this past Sunday’s published update, giving the singer three tunes in the top 40 simultaneously. (Of course, her other two hits currently are “God Is A Woman” and “No Tears Left To Cry”, which are in the top ten.) Continued support for Mike Posner‘s new hit “Song About You” returns the single to second place with 27 new stations, tied with “Happier” by Marshmello x Bastille, while the rest of the top five is comprised of additional impacting titles from David Guetta featuring Anne-Marie (#4) and Dan + Shay (#5). The former, “Don’t Leave Me Alone”, starts with 26 stations, while the latter, “Tequila”, is new at 22. Just one other song is making its first appearance in the top ten, down at #10. With 15 stations on impact, that’s “Loyal To Me” by Nina Nesbitt.

Next week, expect solid debuts from several format newcomers, including AJ Mitchell and Dean Lewis. Check out the report on Tuesday evening, right here on PGTC.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (September 11, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: an electric collaboration impacts at the format, but a pre-impact pop song (that may or may not be about you) is picking up some classic call letters. Let’s dive in and add ’em up:

TAKIN’ BACK THE CITY: As Rosh Hashanah comes to a close once again, it’s a sweet new year (at least, so far) for the new duo Silk City (consisting of Diplo and Mark Ronson) and pop star Dua Lipa, who charge up the format with their “Electricity”. On impact, the song shocks a total of 34 stations, making the hot collaboration the Most Added song at the Top 40 format this week. It appears on Lipa’s forthcoming reissue of her self-titled album, out October 19. The two producers have released a handful of tracks so far in 2018, including collaborations with soloists such as Daniel Merriweather and Desiigner, though it’s not clear if an EP or album from the duo may be coming in the near future.

Meanwhile, Mike Posner has a very strong start for “Song About You”, which he hopes will be his first top 40 single at the format since 2016, when “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” spent two non-consecutive weeks at the top. A week before its official impact date, “Song” is not singing blue, but it is seeing green with 30 stations during this session. Posner’s latest single will be facing off against several competitors on next week’s adds update, including a collaboration from David Guetta and Anne-Marie, the first crossover song by country duo Dan + Shay and a personal favorite from pop singer Nina Nesbitt.

Expect both “Electricity” and “Song About You” to reach the top 50 by the weekend. Stay tuned for more pop madness on PGTC!

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. SILK CITY & DUA LIPA, “Electricity” (Columbia)
2. MIKE POSNER, “Song About You” (Island/Republic)
3. MARSHMELLO x BASTILLE, “Happier” (Astralwerks/Capitol)
4. JASON DERULO x DAVID GUETTA featuring NICKI MINAJ and WILLY WILLIAM, “Goodbye” (Warner Bros.)
5. IMAGINE DRAGONS, “Natural” (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope)
6. LOGIC featuring RYAN TEDDER, “One Day” (Def Jam)
7. LSD (LABRINTH/SIA/DIPLO), “Thunderclouds” (RECORDS/Columbia)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 9, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Hoping it’s a sweet new year for those of you fellow Jewish readers celebrating Rosh Hashanah in the next few days. From the head of the year to the head of the charts, here’s the recap of this week’s active tunes on the pop chart:

THE POSTMAN DELIVERS: If you’re expecting a pop package this Rosh Hashanah, it might be coming from Post Malone. The performer won’t be hand-delivering apples and honey, of course, but his song “Better Now” is still sticky, staying at #1 on the Top 40 chart for the second week. “Better” also climbs into the runner-up position on the Rhythmic chart, though it comes with a minor loss in spins over last week. After a long run up the pop list, it appears “Love Lies” from Khalid x Normani (featured on the soundtrack to Love, Simon) will displace Malone’s smash next week. Should it reach the summit, it’ll be the first single written for a movie to top the chart since 2016 and the first male-female duet from a movie to pull off the feat since 1993. (More on that next week!)

THUNDER IN MY CHART: Weather or not you realize it, larger action on the chart this week is limited, which follows last week’s massive pop parade. The only single entering the top 40 is “Goodbye” from Jason Derulo x David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj and Willy William, which rockets 41-34. The reactive collaboration is the 20th top 40 song for Derulo, the 21st for Guetta, the 37th for Minaj and the second for William. (Phew, that’s a mouthful.) Further down, LSD, the trio of Labrinth, Sia and Diplo, has their first pop chart entry at #47 with “Thunderclouds”, which is featured in a smartphone advertisement. The act recently entered the top 50 on the Alternative chart with “Genius”. Meanwhile, Travis Scott debuts at #49 with “Sicko Mode”. Featured on ASTROWORLD, his recent #1 album on the Billboard 200 list, the single is approaching the top ten on the Rhythmic and Urban radio charts. (“Sicko” also includes uncredited guest vocals by Drake and Swae Lee.)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (September 4, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: we say “Goodbye” to the long weekend with a reactive collaboration. Now, let’s check out what’s powering the pop format and add ’em up:

ONE GOOD BUY: In one of the more predictable results this year, “Goodbye”, the new collaboration by Jason Derulo x David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj and Willy William, easily finishes at #1 on this Tuesday’s Top 40 report, partially due to the lack of competition following the Labor Day holiday. It starts with 109 stations on impact, towering over the #2 entry by a giant margin of 85 stations. Holdovers make up most of the rest of the top ten, though there’s a noteworthy entry for Urban and Rhythmic radio hit “Sicko Mode” by Travis Scott, tying for eighth place with ten stations this week. (An official impact date has yet to surface.)

Though nothing is currently on the schedule, stay tuned for more information regarding any titles impacting next week.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. JASON DERULO x DAVID GUETTA featuring NICKI MINAJ and WILLY WILLIAM, “Goodbye” (Warner Bros.)
2. CALVIN HARRIS & SAM SMITH, “Promises” (Capitol-Columbia)
3. MARSHMELLO x BASTILLE, “Happier” (Astralwerks/Capitol)
4. IMAGINE DRAGONS, “Natural” (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope)
5. CHARLIE PUTH, “The Way I Am” (Artist Partner/Atlantic)
6-T. BAZZI featuring CAMILA CABELLO, “Beautiful” (APG/Atlantic)
6-T. LOVELYTHEBAND, “Broken” (RED)
8-T. JUICE WRLD, “Lucid Dreams” (Grade A/Interscope)
8-T. PANIC! AT THE DISCO, “High Hopes” (Fueled By Ramen/RRP)
8-T. TRAVIS SCOTT, “Sicko Mode” (Epic)
