RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 6, 2020)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Hope you’re enjoying the long weekend! It’s a super sugary one at the format. Here’s what’s popping this week:

“SUGAR” LANDS: Harry Styles holds at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart for a sixth week with “Watermelon Sugar”, still more than 1,900 spins ahead of Lewis Capaldi‘s “Before You Go” at #2. The tune also climbs from 5-4 on the Hot AC chart. Some stations are beginning to add “Falling” from the Fine Line album, though it has not yet been confirmed as the next U.S. single.

Get out your vacuums: with three titles headed to recurrent status and several other releases collapsing in airplay, there are five new tracks in the top 40 this week. Leading things off, Calvin Harris and The Weeknd make a move from 47-31 with “Over Now”. It’s their 21st and 15th top 40 hits to date, respectively. Landing at #34 is the first top 40 entry for the act BLACKPINK, “Ice Cream”, a collaboration with Selena Gomez. This is her 20th top 40 hit as a solo artist. After several weeks of landing just outside the top 40, newcomer Zoe Wees climbs from 41-37 with “Control”, her first time in the region. The final two entries are performed by acts who score their second top 40 singles at the format: Saweetie rises from 42-39 with “Tap In”, as Regard and RAYE are up from 44-40 with “Secrets”. “Tap” is a current top five smash on the Rhythmic and Urban charts, while “Secrets” recently led the Dance chart.

It’s also really busy in the top 50 this week: Conan Gray leads things off at #46 with “Heather”, which could become his second top 40 entry here. It’s already climbing in the top 40 on the Hot AC chart. With their recent #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion start at #48 with “WAP”, a top ten hit on the Rhythmic chart that’s just below the region at Urban radio on this week’s update. Joel Corry and MNEK are atop the Dance chart once again with “Head & Heart”, which lands at #49 on the Top 40 chart. Finally, with a song that went viral on the video app TikTok, Claire Rosinkranz debuts at #50 with “Backyard Boy”.

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Snap, crackle… BTS pops at the Top 40 format in a big way! Let’s add ’em up:

BEYOND THE ADDS: To no one’s surprise, BTS and their new single “Dynamite” are absolutely explosive at the Top 40 format, as the song blasts in with 171 adds on impact, their biggest opening to date so far. The track started at #32 on last week’s published chart and should fly up in the coming days, especially given all the new action on it. Activity has been limited for it at other formats since its release, though “Dynamite” has received some smaller airplay at both Hot AC and Rhythmic stations.

Landing in second place, up from tenth last week, 24KGoldn and Iann Dior also scored a huge win for “Mood”, in with 64 adds.

Recent TikTok hits from Claire Rosinkranz and Dixie D’Amelio also reached the top ten on the log this week: the latter’s track “Be Happy” landed in seventh place with 18 stations, while the former’s EP cut “Backyard Boy” started in eighth with 16.

Charting singles from AJRAva Max and Miley Cyrus returned to the top ten on the adds report this week.

We’ll see you next Tuesday for another adds recap, including data on the Calvin Harris and The Weeknd collaboration that you may be bumping by the weeknd.
