RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 31, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. It’s time to buss open the survey and look at what’s popping at the format this week:

A CHANGE IN POSITIONS: In what is likely its last week at the top, “Positions” by Ariana Grande scores a seventh week at #1 on the Top 40 chart. Grande claims two of the top five songs on the chart, as “34+35” rises from 7-5.

Three new songs light up the top 40 on this week’s chart, led by a 41-31 jump for Ava Max with “My Head & My Heart”. The tune is her fourth top 40 entry thus far. After sneaking into the top 50 last week, Jason Derulo and Adam Levine jump from 49-34 with “Lifestyle”. It’s the former’s 23rd top 40 hit and latter’s fifth as a solo artist. Chart newcomer CJ is also on the move, lifting from 42-40 with “Whoopty”. His recent viral hit is rising in the top ten on the Rhythmic chart, which means he may as well be more addicted to airplay than blue cheese (at least, for now.)

In the top 50, “Skin” begins at #43 for Sabrina Carpenter, while an entry at #48 belongs to Madison Beer with “BS”. Two other titles are in the region for the first time, as newcomer Erica Banks bounces in at #49 with “Buss It” and the collaborative efforts of Loud Luxury, Frank Walker and Stephen Puth charge the #50 spot with “Like Gold”.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 17, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. For all the newest positions and what songs are occupying them, let’s take a look at what’s popping at the format this week:

STILL IN POSITION: Leading the Top 40 chart for a fifth week, Ariana Grande‘s “Positions” remains strong at the format. She also enters the top ten with “34+35”, climbing from 11-8. The latter track impacts at the Hot AC format this week, where it currently appears at #41 and bulleted.

Disney star Olivia Rodrigo makes the jump to the Top 40 radio list with her first charting single way up at #30. “Driver’s License” should be named the new #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 update tomorrow, making her the first artist of 2021 to debut at the top. Leaping from 43-38 is “Without You”, the second top 40 hit from The Kid LAROI. The two word main title has entered the top 40 in at least seven decades now, from Johnny Tillotson back in 1961 and Nilsson in 1972 to more recent songs by Hinder in 2008 and David Guetta and Usher in 2011. The last of the top 40 entries comes from Saweetie and Doja Cat with “Best Friend”, in at at #40. It’s their third and fifth top 40 hits at the format, respectively. The former’s Jhené Aiko-assisted “Back To The Streets” lifts from 3-1 on the Rhythmic radio chart.

Newcomer CJ has this week’s top new entry in the top 50 with his viral rap hit “Whoopty”, which lands at #47. One notch lower, the Zara Larsson and Young Thug collaboration “Talk About Love” debuts at #48. One final single sneaks in at #50: “Fly Away”, the latest chart entry from Tones And I.
