ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (May 28, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: summer begins with an obvious choice, 5 Seconds Of Summer, but the second new single from Ed Sheeran this month is also catching some rays. Grab the sunblock and let’s add ’em up:

SECONDS IN FIRST: Jumping into the pool of pop this Tuesday, we have two releases clearing 100 stations in their first weeks. Leading things off, “Easier” by 5 Seconds Of Summer is an easy pick for the panel, as it starts with 154 adds on impact. The song is off to a great start on the chart as well, as it debuted at #30 last Sunday after just three days of airplay. Will it become their second #1 hit at the format later this season? Too soon to say, especially with a number of big single releases still on the way, but it should continue its ascent at a decent pace.

The other big title on this week’s log is Sheeran’s collaboration with Chance The Rapper and PnB Rock titled “Cross Me”. That song, which joined the chart at #40 on Sunday, has a strong second place finish with 110 adds. The single follows very quickly after the release of Sheeran’s “I Don’t Care” with Justin Bieber, which reached the top ten on the same update and may top the survey soon enough. Both songs can found on his forthcoming No. 6 Collaborations Project album, due July 12.

Elsewhere in the top ten, you’ll find two times the Lizzo, as well as enduring entries from artists like Billie Eilish and Halsey.

Next week, Katy Perry‘s new single “Never Really Over” should easily leap over the competition, including tracks from Daya and Miley Cyrus. Who else will heat up the date? Stay tuned.

1. 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER, “Easier” (Interscope)
2. ED SHEERAN featuring CHANCE THE RAPPER and PNB ROCK, “Cross Me” (Atlantic)
3. LIZZO, “Truth Hurts” (Atlantic)
4. DJ KHALED featuring SZA, “Just Us” (We The Best/Epic)
5-T. BILLIE EILISH, “Bad Guy” (Darkroom/Interscope)
5-T. LIZZO, “Juice” (Atlantic)
7. HALSEY, “Nightmare” (Capitol)
8. MAX featuring QUINN XCII, “Love Me Less” (Arista/RED)
9-T. ALLY BROOKE featuring A BOOGIE WIT DA HOODIE, “Lips Don’t Lie” (Latium/Atlantic)
9-T. DELACEY, “My Man” (HITCO)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (May 26, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Happy Memorial Day! We’re saluting all the veterans and chart veterans alike this weekend, so let’s see what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

THAT’S “DANCING”: Sam Smith and Normani held off the Jonas Brothers in another super tight race on the survey, with a difference of about 40 spins between their respective tunes. Thus, “Dancing With A Stranger” remains at #1 for the second week and “Sucker”, a former #1 song, holds at #2 again. The latter song also tops the Hot AC list for the second week. It’s unclear what entry is going to lead the top 40 next week, as holiday programming will be affecting spins for the next few days. We’ll see what happens.

This week’s chart is short on debut action, but the titles that do make it in are all pretty significant. Blasting in at #30, “Easier” is the ninth top 40 hit for the Australian quartet 5 Seconds Of Summer and the first from their forthcoming album. Of their eight songs to previously enter the region, just one topped the list: “Youngblood”, a five-week #1 from last fall. Ed Sheeran also sneaks into the top 40 with a second collaboration from his forthcoming No. 6 Collaborations Project set. “Cross Me” debuts at #40, giving Sheeran his 18th top 40 hit here, while featured artists Chance The Rapper and PnB Rock receive their fourth and first, respectively. The lead single from the album, a collaboration with Justin Bieber titled “I Don’t Care”, moves from 11-9 on the same chart.

Additionally, DJ Khaled and SZA jump in at #42 with “Just Us” from the former’s Father Of Asahd album, which registered as the second Most Added tune on this past Tuesday’s report, as Lizzo checks in at #47 with “Truth Hurts”, which was added to the deluxe edition of her Cuz I Love You album. The latter entry, which was originally released in 2017, spiked at several platforms following its inclusion in a key scene in the Netflix film Someone Great last month. The track also storms in at #42 on this week’s Rhythmic radio update, while “Just” earns top 40 entries on both the Rhythmic (#27) and Urban (#44) charts (with more action to come.)

RADIO REPORT: What’s Popping At Top 40 Radio This Week (July 30-31, 2018)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are five new tunes impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

CHEAT CODES & LITTLE MIX – “Only You” (300 Ent.)
Album: TBA (2018)
Past T40 History: Little Mix has struggled with the U.S. radio audience, with four minor top 40 tunes to date. Will this go further?

CHILDISH GAMBINO – “Summertime Magic” (Wolf & Rothstein/RCA)
Album: TBA (2018)
Past T40 History: Though “This Is America” just missed the top 40 here, it stormed into the top ten at Rhythmic and Urban radio.

DJ KHALED featuring JUSTIN BIEBER, CHANCE THE RAPPER & QUAVO – “No Brainer” (We The Best/Epic)
Album: Father Of Asahd (2018)
Past T40 History: This lineup previously entered the top 40 last summer with the hit “I’m The One”, which spent five weeks at #3.

THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring EMILY WARREN – “Side Effects” (Disruptor/Columbia)
EP: Sick Boy… Side Effects (2018)
Past T40 History: Warren last sang on a chart song by the duo as an unbilled performer on 2017’s “Paris”, which got as high as #3.

ZEDD & ELLEY DUHÉ – “Happy Now” (Interscope)
Album: TBA (2018)
Past T40 History: Zedd’s been hitting the pop survey since 2012, scoring a pair of #1 hits in the process. Duhé is a newcomer here.

Next week: Anne-Marie takes us back to “2002”, while Logic and Ryan Tedder wonder if for “One Day” that they’ll the #1 song on the Most Added list. We’ll see next Tuesday.

Which of these new songs would you like to see top the charts? Let me know!

Vital Titles: The CHRonicles Of A “Night”

Here comes the "Night".

Here comes the “Night”.

As it sometimes happens on the CHR/Top 40 format, there are two songs with the same title, but a different melody, competing for slots across the panel. In this case, there are two “All Night” releases freshly reaching the top 60, with each steadily gaining week-to-week. I think I’ll grab some popcorn while they duke it out. (Just grab the fat-free kind, I’m on a diet after award season.)

These acts, a solo rapper and a pop quartet, may not share the same fan base in terms of core demographics and other statistics, but they do have plenty of supporters globally. Will radio’s gatekeepers give them the green light? Let me know what you think!

CHANCE THE RAPPER featuring KNOX FORTUNE – “All Night” (in2une)

PEAK: #56 (as of 2/26/17)

KEY STATIONS TO DATE: WBMP/New York, WBBM and WKSC/Chicago, KMVQ/San Francisco, additional airplay in Boston and Orlando
PRIOR CHART ACTION: no top 50 hits to date; “No Problem” (featuring Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz) and his feature on “All My Friends” (Snakehips) impacted at the format, but failed to chart.
STREAMS TO DATE: 43+ million on Spotify
ADDITIONAL INFO: “All Night” now ranks in the top 30 on Rhythmic radio, where it’s being played in some prominent markets.

PREDICTION: Cloudy with a chance of Chance; in2une’s inconsistent track record at the format with independent artists could be the biggest issue holding “Night” back, but the Best New Artist winner may surprise with a sleeper hit. Stream a little stream of him.

THE VAMPS & MATOMA – “All Night” (Island/Republic)

PEAK: #57 (as of 2/26/17)

KEY STATIONS TO DATE: Hits 1/SiriusXM, Radio Disney/Los Angeles, additional airplay in Las Vegas and Phoenix
PRIOR CHART ACTION: “Somebody To You” (featuring Demi Lovato) got as high as #50 for two weeks in September 2014; a reissued uptempo remix of “Can We Dance” and “Wake Up” failed to chart.
STREAMS TO DATE: 143+ million on Spotify
ADDITIONAL INFO: “All Night” has reached the top 40 in four countries overseas, including a lone top ten (#6) peak in Ireland.

PREDICTION: Re-vamped image and sound is a streaming winner, but minimal U.S. support makes this “Night” less memorable. Will the U.S. audience ever fully appreciate The Vamps? It is just too hard to tell at the moment. Hey, there’s always the next single.
