ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (May 21, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Halsey‘s controlling your pop dreams, as her latest single easily takes the crown over a single from one of Friday’s most-anticipated releases. Let’s add ’em up:

WELCOME TO MY “NIGHTMARE”: She may not be Alice Cooper yet, but Halsey is rocking atop this week’s pop radio adds report with a lofty 162 stations on impact for “Nightmare”. The hit entered at #26 on last Sunday’s list after hourly airplay at many stations on Friday and should continue to rise quickly in the coming weeks. Will it become the performer’s third #1 single of 2019? Will the dream police stop her? Someone call Cheap Trick to solve this one! For those of you chart archive enthusiasts, this is the third “nightmare” title to reach the top 40 at the format, with cuts by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (1988) and Shontelle (2010) being the first two to pull off the feat.

Of course, DJ Khaled has another one on the Top 40 airwaves, as his SZA-assisted “Just Us” takes the runner-up spot on the log. With 48 stations on impact, the collaboration from Father Of Asahd should easily chart by this weekend’s published update. You’ll also find a number of emerging titles from acts like Christian Paul, Lizzo and SHAED among the rest of the top ten this week.

Next week, an easier choice emerges for the format: of course, that would be the latest single from 5 Seconds Of Summer. Until then, have a good long weekend!

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. HALSEY, “Nightmare” (Capitol)
2. DJ KHALED featuring SZA, “Just Us” (We The Best/Epic)
3. SHAED, “Trampoline” (Photo Finish/Caroline)
4. BILLIE EILISH, “Bad Guy” (Darkroom/Interscope)
5. KYGO & RITA ORA, “Carry On” (Palm Tree/RCA)
6. ALAN WALKER featuring SABRINA CARPENTER and FARRUKO, “On My Way” (RCA)
7-T. BRYCE VINE featuring YG, “La La Land” (Sire/Warner Bros.)
7-T. MAX featuring QUINN XCII, “Love Me Less” (Arista/RED)
9-T. CHRISTIAN PAUL, “Strong” (12Tone/SRP)
9-T. LIZZO, “Truth Hurts” (Atlantic)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (May 7, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: from “ME!” to “You”, it’s another crazy Tuesday at the Top 40 format with the latest smash from Shawn Mendes in the mix. Let’s add ’em up:

AN IFFY SITUATION: It may not be the Yvonne Elliman song, but pop radio has the fever for Shawn Mendes’s new single “If I Can’t Have You”, which can have the Most Added title on this week’s report. It starts with a perfect 184 stations, much like “ME!” accomplished for Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie last week. In doing so, “If” becomes the fourth song in the Mediabase era and fifth in the plays-per-week era to accomplish the feat. However, as noted previously, this event just happened here last week. Thus, we now have our first back-to-back set of perfect weeks ever, with both songs being worked by the same promotion department. At this point, we’re likely to see several more attempts at this challenge through the summer by other larger singles, which could be as soon as next week. (See below!)

The only other new release of note comes from the K-pop act BLACKPINK with “Kill This Love”, their first title to impact here. A decent 26 stations on impact gives the female-led quartet a third place finish. In October 2012, another K-pop girl group peaked at #44 at the format with their sole chart entry: that was the Akon-assisted “Like Money” by the Wonder Girls. We’ll see if “Kill” is poised to go higher in the coming weeks.

Repeated titles from acts like Billie Eilish, Juice WRLD, Lizzo and MAX are among the tracks that make up the rest of the top ten this week.

Next week, we’re sure that you’ll care about Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber‘s track “I Don’t Care”, which will almost certainly be in the top spot on the list. How many adds will it collect? Stay tuned.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN (TWELVE)
1. SHAWN MENDES, “If I Can’t Have You” (Island/Republic)
2. BILLIE EILISH, “Bad Guy” (Darkroom/Interscope)
3. BLACKPINK, “Kill This Love” (YG Ent./Interscope)
4. MAX featuring QUINN XCII, “Love Me Less” (Arista/RED)
5-T. JUICE WRLD, “Hear Me Calling” (Grade A/Interscope)
5-T. KHALID, “Talk” (RCA)
7. DADDY YANKEE & KATY PERRY featuring SNOW, “Con Calma” (El Cartel/UMLE/Capitol)
8. MARTIN GARRIX featuring MACKLEMORE & PATRICK STUMP, “Summer Days” (RCA)
9. PANIC! AT THE DISCO, “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” (Fueled By Ramen/EMG)
10-T. BAZZI, “Paradise” (Artist Partner/Atlantic)
10-T. BRYCE VINE featuring YG, “La La Land” (Sire/Warner Bros.)
10-T. LIZZO, “Juice” (Atlantic)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (April 2, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: it’s back to the record ranch with the current viral hit from Lil Nas X, but a few new titles are riding into the top ten as well. Yeehaw! Let’s add ’em up:

A LIL MORE ACTION: Headed down the “Old Town Road” once more, rapper Lil Nas X gets a lil boost at the format, as 44 new stations come in for his first single to chart on the Top 40 list. Meanwhile, the top impacting release comes from newcomer Kiana Ledé, whose “Ex” slides into second place with 28 stations. The song is currently in the top 20 at Rhythmic radio, while also rising again (after a brief descent) at the Urban format, where it sits in the top 30.

Elsewhere, Ciara starts out solidly with a fourth place finish and 18 first-week stations for “Thinkin Bout You”, which she hopes to push into the top 40 for her first appearance in the region since 2009’s Justin Timberlake-assisted “Love Sex Magic”. A number of proven hits from past weeks, including songs by Ally Brooke, Billie Eilish and Mabel, continue to remain active here.

Next Tuesday will feature a competitive session at the format, as impacting titles from In Real Life, Jennifer Lopez, the Jonas Brothers, Kelly Clarkson and Rachel Crow are among the top names currently in the mix. Will anyone else jump in?

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN (TWELVE)
1. LIL NAS X, “Old Town Road” (Columbia)
2. KIANA LEDÉ, “Ex” (Republic)
3. LAUV & TROYE SIVAN, “I’m So Tired…” (Capitol-in2une/AWAL)

4-T. CIARA, “Thinkin Bout You” (Beauty Marks/ADA)
6. AJ MITCHELL, “All My Friends” (Epic)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 31, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Can you believe tomorrow is the first day of April? Crazy! As we head further into the spring, here’s what’s blooming and popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

ALL FOUR “7”: Down roughly 100 spins or so from last week, Ariana Grande‘s single “7 Rings” lands a fourth week at #1 on the Top 40 chart. It should easily score a fifth week. Her follow-up hit “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” holds outside the top ten once again, though it’s up a spot to #11 and can enter the region by next week’s update.

AJ Mitchell‘s “All My Friends” leaps from 41-34 this week, earning him his second top 40 entry, as he leads a pack of four new hits in that section of the chart. Next up, “Hard Place” by format newcomer H.E.R. moves from 42-38, while “La La Land” lands at #39, giving Bryce Vine and YG their second top 40 entries. That track rises from #48 last week, where it debuted. However, there’s one artist in the mix that’s not scoring her first or second, but rather, her 29th top 40 song on the current chart. P!nk jumps from 43-40 with “Walk Me Home”, the lead single from her forthcoming release Hurts 2B Human. The tune is already climbing through the top ten at the Hot AC format.

Another three tracks reach the top 50 this week at the format, led by the viral hit “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X at #41. It also bolts into the top 40 on the Rhythmic chart. A few notches lower, “Chlorine” seeps into the pool of pop at #48 for Twenty One Pilots. It marks the second crossover song from the act’s most recent album Trench. Finally, a current top ten tune on both the Rhythmic and Urban lists also busts down into the top 50 this week: that title is “Thotiana”, the first chart entry for Blueface, which lands at #50. A remix of the single features Cardi B and the aforementioned YG, though neither performer is credited on Mediabase.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (March 26, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: saddle up for the adventure with the help of a short track that’s going long at several radio formats. Grab your horse and let’s add ’em up:

ON THE “ROAD” AGAIN: Due to some bigger music and radio meetings on the West Coast this week, there’s not much to cover in the hit parade, other than viral hit “Old Town Road” providing Lil Nas X with this week’s Most Added title. It’s new at a total of 30 stations this week. You can bet on this horse, or rather, this song to make it into the top 50 by the weekend.

Below “Old”, established titles by AJ Mitchell, Mabel, Twenty One Pilots and others populate much of the rest of the top ten.

Lizzo‘s “Juice” should deliver a tasty addition to next week’s session, but who else will be sipping on adds? Stay tuned.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN (TWELVE)
1. LIL NAS X, “Old Town Road” (Columbia)
2. MABEL, “Don’t Call Me Up” (Capitol)
3-T. MARSHMELLO featuring CHVRCHES, “Here With Me” (Joytime Collective/Glassnote-Republic)
3-T. TWENTY ONE PILOTS, “Chlorine” (Fueled By Ramen/EMG)
5. LAUV & TROYE SIVAN, “I’m So Tired…” (Capitol-in2une/AWAL)
6. PANIC! AT THE DISCO, “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” (Fueled By Ramen/EMG)
7. CITY GIRLS featuring CARDI B, “Twerk” (Quality Control/Motown/Capitol)
8. AJ MITCHELL, “All My Friends” (Epic)
9. BRYCE VINE featuring YG, “La La Land” (Sire/Warner Bros.)
10-T. ALLY BROOKE featuring TYGA, “Low Key” (Latium/Atlantic)
10-T. B. BLANCO, TAINY, S. GOMEZ & J BALVIN, “I Can’t Get Enough” (NEON15/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 24, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Time to ring in the new survey, so let’s head up the list and check out what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

THE SHAPE OF “RINGS”: Ariana Grande‘s international hit “7 Rings” is safely #1 again at the Top 40 format for a third week, with the nearest competitor still about 3,900 spins away. It remains at #6 on the Rhythmic chart and rises to #15 at Hot AC radio. It should remain at the summit for a fourth week, given its sizable boost of just over 500 spins, as her follow-up single “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” holds outside the top ten at #12. It’s up nearly 1,100 spins versus last week.

After debuting at #45 on last week’s list, Lauv and Troye Sivan‘s “I’m So Tired…” climbs to #37 on this week’s survey, which gives the former his third top 40 single at the format and the latter his fifth. The tune is the highest of three debuts in the top 40, followed by Jeremy Zucker‘s “comethru” (up 42-39) and Jake Miller‘s “Wait For You” (41-40). Zucker’s hit is his first to reach the region, though Miller’s entry is his second and first in 4-1/2 years. That song, “First Flight Home”, got as high as #29 in October 2014.

The top 50 is full of new collaborations landing on the countdown, with “Bones” from Galantis featuring OneRepublic starting at #47 to lead things off. Bryce Vine‘s latest tune, the YG-assisted “La La Land”, follows at #48, which scored 39 stations on Tuesday to become the Most Added title at the format. Finally, the recent Rhythmic and Urban radio chart-topper “Going Bad” enters at #49 for Meek Mill featuring Drake, the latest single from Mill’s 2018 album Championships. Despite a lengthy history at both formats over the last few years, this is his first song to chart at the pop format.
