RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 16, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. We certainly have the highest of hopes for a great 2019, but there are a couple of more weeks until the calendar changes. Until then, here’s what’s popping this week:

NO NEED TO PANIC: Panic! At The Disco leads the Alternative, Hot AC and Top 40 lists for the second week in a row with the song “High Hopes”, a cut from their album Pray For The Wicked. Individually, it’s spending its sixth, third and second weeks on top of those respective formats. So, there’s no need to panic (other than with Panic!) this holiday season… look for the song to hold at #1 for the duration of the usual freeze, remaining firmly ahead of the competition at all three formats. On the Top 40 airwaves, Ariana Grande‘s hit “Breathin” is waiting in the wings, remaining at #2, while Halsey‘s “Without Me” sticks it out at #4 again this week.

With several songs being purged this week ahead of the holidays, there are four new titles entering the top 40 this week. The highest is in at #36, the fourth top 40 hit for the Danish band Lukas Graham. “Love Someone” can be found on 3 (The Purple Album), the latest set by the act, which was released in late October. Their biggest hit at the format, “7 Years”, spent a week at #1 in May 2016. In at #38, Rita Ora returns to the top 40 with her sixth entry, “Let You Love Me”. The single has already reached the top ten in quite a few countries, including Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom. “Wake Up In The Sky”, a recent #1 song on the Rhythmic and Urban charts, jumps in at #39 this week, giving Gucci Mane his fourth top 40 single (and the first in a lead role), Bruno Mars his 20th and Kodak Black his first. Mane’s album Evil Genius should debut in the top five on the upcoming Billboard 200 list. Finally, at #40, “I Found You” pairs Benny Blanco and Calvin Harris together, giving the former his second chart hit as an artist

Ella Mai has the week’s highest new entry in the top 50 with “Trip”, climbing aboard at #46. It’s also the new #1 single at Rhythmic radio on the current update. Two notches lower, “Arms Around You” enters at #48, credited to four performers: XXXTentaction x Lil Pump featuring Maluma & Swae Lee. It’s another of the Rhythmic crossovers on the Top 40 list; “Arms” is rising through the top 20 there. “You Say” is also new to the top 50, coming in at #50 for Christian crossover star Lauren Daigle. It’s her first track at this format to chart, though she’s had plenty of hit songs in the religious music world.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from PGTC!

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (November 25, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Black Friday may be over, but there are still plenty of hot sellers to be found here on the pop airwaves. Seeing green yet? Here’s all the action this Sunday:

HAPPIER THAN BEFORE: Leading the Top 40 chart for the second week, “Happier” by Marshmello x Bastille is still gaining nicely at the format, as the recent Alternative radio chart-topper stays at #2 on that list. With Panic! At The Disco‘s “High Hopes” holding steady at #1 there and climbing 5-2 on the Top 40 survey, the published charts at the two formats contain the same songs in the top two positions (in a different order) for the first time since May 2012. Yes, it’s been that long since “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra and “We Are Young” by fun. featuring Janelle Monáe were present in the region. For “High” and its climb to #2 on the pop chart, another piece of chart history: the title now ties the 2006 peak for “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” at the format that summer, an incredible feat for a band who hasn’t gone any higher than #30 in-between those two songs. Does the song become their first to reach the summit on the Top 40 airwaves? We think it’ll be a tragedy-free December for the smash.

This week’s debut action is very light, with AJ Mitchell‘s “Girls” climbing from 41-40 as the sole top 40 entry on the survey. It’s the teenage singer’s first top 40 song at the format. Further down, two collaborations land in the top 50 for the first time: “I Found You” enters at #47 for Benny Blanco & Calvin Harris, while “Wake Up In The Sky” comes in at #50 for Gucci Mane x Bruno Mars x Kodak Black. The latter song never received an adds date at this format, though it’s currently sitting at #1 on the Rhythmic chart and in the top five at Urban radio. Blanco’s “Eastside”, featuring Halsey and Khalid, re-enters the top ten here this week, up 11-8.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (November 13, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: we say our thanks for Ariana Grande‘s new single before we settle down for Thanksgiving, but we’re absolutely thankful for plenty of titles in the top ten. Time to add ’em up:

THE “NEXT” BEST THING: After a good start at the format last Tuesday and some bigger sales and streaming gains in the past few days, Grande’s “Thank U, Next” performs very well on this week’s Top 40 adds report, scoring 82 new stations. On Sunday, the song became Grande’s 19th top 40 hit at the format since her debut in 2013, which comes at the same time that “God Is A Woman” is leading the survey and “Breathin” is gaining nicely in the top ten. “Thank”, which is the title cut from her forthcoming set, has all sorts of chart action on Apple Music, iTunes and Spotify, breaking several streaming records in the process recently. As for the Top 40 format, you can probably expect “Thank” at the summit sometime early next year, unless it speeds up before the holidays.

An impacting release of note is by Benny Blanco and Calvin Harris with “I Found You”, which checks in with 26 stations and a second place finish. Blanco’s single “Eastside” (with Halsey and Khalid) recently entered the top ten at the format, while Harris’s single “Promises” (with Sam Smith) just made the top 20. Both songs appear to be winding down, so “Found” will probably enter the top 50 quite easily by the end of this or next week. No word on if an EP or album from Blanco will be surfacing anytime soon.

Elsewhere, look for new hits by Ava Max, Zara Larsson and others to continue their fast ascent at the format as the fall rolls on.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. ARIANA GRANDE, “Thank U, Next” (Republic)
2. BENNY BLANCO & CALVIN HARRIS, “I Found You” (Columbia-Interscope)
3. AVA MAX, “Sweet But Psycho” (APG/Atlantic)
4. THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring KELSEA BALLERINI, “This Feeling” (Disruptor/Columbia)
5. ELLIE GOULDING x DIPLO featuring SWAE LEE, “Close To Me” (Interscope)
6-T. KHALID, “Better” (Right Hand/RCA)
6-T. ZARA LARSSON, “Ruin My Life” (TEN/Epic)
8. DJ SNAKE featuring SELENA GOMEZ, OZUNA & CARDI B, “Taki Taki” (Geffen/Interscope)
9-T. LADY GAGA & BRADLEY COOPER, “Shallow” (Interscope)
9-T. LAUV featuring JULIA MICHAELS, “There’s No Way” (Kobalt/AWAL/in2une)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (August 21, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: two top collaborations by Marshmello x Bastille and Calvin Harris & Sam Smith make the pop panel happier, but what else is popping at the format? Let’s add ’em up:

BREAKING PROMISES: We’ve been pretty happy lately, but we sure are happier seeing the song “Happier” at the top position. The first collaboration from Marshmello and Bastille puts a smile or two on the Most Added report, with a hefty first week total of 64 stations. “Happier” is also the Most Added song at the Alternative format this Tuesday, with a Hot AC impact date coming up next month. Bastille recently topped the Alternative chart for a week with “Quarter Past Midnight”, while Marshmello stalled at #2 on the Top 40 chart in a collaboration with Anne-Marie called “Friends”.

Meanwhile, another two first-time collaborators, Calvin Harris and Sam Smith, keep their promise for a good first week on the adds report with “Promises”, which breaks at 53 stations during its first session. (Of course, it’s not breaking any promises; it’s just the label breaking it at the format.) The release still holds at #1 on iTunes throughout certain parts of Europe, including the United Kingdom, though it just missed the top ten at the service here in the States. Harris’s recent pop smash with Dua Lipa, “One Kiss”, just exited the top ten at the format. (It’s still in the top 40, however.)

Next week, look out for LSD‘s “Thunderclouds” and Panic! At The Disco‘s “High Hopes” in their quest for the Most Added song in the country. The latter track ranked just below the top ten on the report this week, and has been receiving a fair amount of early airplay since the start of the month.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. MARSHMELLO x BASTILLE, “Happier” (Astralwerks/Capitol)
2. CALVIN HARRIS & SAM SMITH, “Promises” (Capitol-Columbia)
3. BAZZI featuring CAMILA CABELLO, “Beautiful” (APG/Atlantic)
4. IMAGINE DRAGONS, “Natural” (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope)
5. BENNY BLANCO, HALSEY & KHALID, “Eastside” (Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
6-T. LOGIC featuring RYAN TEDDER, “One Day” (Def Jam)
6-T. LOVELYTHEBAND, “Broken” (RED)
8-T. THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring EMILY WARREN, “Side Effects” (Disruptor/Columbia)
8-T. TIESTO & DZEKO featuring PREME and POST MALONE, “Jackie Chan” (Casablanca/Republic)
10. WEEZER, “Africa” (Crush Music/RRP)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (July 31, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: there’s a “no brainer” leading the charge at the format, while several more collaborations are poised to fly up the charts in the coming weeks. Let’s add ’em up:

INSANE IN THE “BRAINER”: Following their hit “I’m The One” last year, which spent five weeks at #3 that June and July, the second collaboration by DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Chance The Rapper and Quavo easily secures the top spot on the newest adds report at Top 40 radio. “No Brainer”, which also recently led the all-genre chart at iTunes, had a triple-digit finish with a total of 148 stations on impact. The single is featured on DJ Khaled’s forthcoming album, Father Of Asahd, due in October.

There’s also significant action from the panel for “Side Effects”, the latest collaboration from duo The Chainsmokers featuring a frequent writer and singer for the two men, Emily Warren. It starts at 81 stations for a very strong second place finish. Warren is a co-writer on the duo’s Daya-assisted hit “Don’t Let Me Down”, which totaled three weeks at #1 in June and July of 2016. Warren is also heard (though uncredited) on their hit “Paris” from the following year, a #3 hit for three weeks that April.

Next week, look out for Anne-Marie‘s “2002” and Logic & Ryan Tedder‘s “One Day” to reach the top five on the weekly report.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. DJ KHALED featuring JUSTIN BIEBER, CHANCE THE RAPPER & QUAVO, “No Brainer” (We The Best/Epic)
2. THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring EMILY WARREN, “Side Effects” (Disruptor/Columbia)
3. ZEDD & ELLEY DUHÉ, “Happy Now” (Interscope)
4. ARIANA GRANDE, “God Is A Woman” (Republic)
5. DRAKE, “In My Feelings” (YMCMB/Republic)
6. BENNY BLANCO, HALSEY & KHALID, “Eastside” (Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
7-T. CHARLIE PUTH, “The Way I Am” (Artist Partner/Atlantic)
7-T. CHILDISH GAMBINO, “Summertime Magic” (Wolf & Rothstein/RCA)
9. IMAGINE DRAGONS, “Natural” (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope)
10. JUICE WRLD, “Lucid Dreams” (Grade A/Interscope)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (July 24, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: it’s a holy hit session, led by the newest single by Ariana Grande. How’s the rest of the pop world looking? It’s time for the musical miracle of analyzing adds, so let’s read on and add ’em up:

WONDER “WOMAN”: Flying high at #1 on this week’s Top 40 report is “God Is A Woman” by Ariana Grande, which comes just about a week after “No Tears Left To Cry”, the lead single from Sweetener, topped the published chart. It’s new at 88 stations; look for it to continue its huge gains and upward movement throughout the next few weeks. The album arrives on August 17. (Get ready for a bible full of bops, at least if “God” commands you to listen.)

The rest of the top five is packed with recent Urban crossovers and additional impacting singles, like “Eastside” by benny blanco, Halsey and Khalid, which climbs from sixth to third place with 48 new stations this week. That collaboration is well on its way to top 40 status, as is Charlie Puth‘s “The Way I Am”, tied for fourth place with 37 new stations on the latest report. Meanwhile, the current single from Imagine Dragons, titled “Natural”, sneaks into the top ten with 16 new stations, tied for sixth place. No adds date has been set for the hit at this format, but it pulled in 43 stations at Alternative radio (second place) and 37 stations at Hot AC radio (first place) during this week’s Monday and Tuesday sessions.

Next week, look out for a couple of notable duets to score some solid numbers, performed by Cheat Codes and Little Mix (“Only You”) and Zedd and Elley Duhé (“Happy Now”), while Childish Gambino goes it alone for “Summertime Magic”.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. ARIANA GRANDE, “God Is A Woman” (Republic)
2. DRAKE, “In My Feelings” (YMCMB/Republic)
3. BENNY BLANCO, HALSEY & KHALID, “Eastside” (Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
4-T. CHARLIE PUTH, “The Way I Am” (Artist Partner/Atlantic)
4-T. JUICE WRLD, “Lucid Dreams” (Grade A/Interscope)
6-T. BEBE REXHA, “I’m A Mess” (Warner Bros.)
6-T. IMAGINE DRAGONS, “Natural” (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope)
6-T. TIESTO & DZEKO featuring PREME and POST MALONE, “Jackie Chan” (Casablanca/Republic)
9-T. JONAS BLUE featuring JACK & JACK, “Rise” (Capitol)
9-T. KYGO featuring MIGUEL, “Remind Me To Forget” (Ultra/RCA)

RADIO REPORT: What’s Popping At Top 40 Radio This Week (July 23-24, 2018)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are three new hits impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

ARIANA GRANDE – “God Is A Woman” (Republic)
Album: Sweetener (2018)
Past T40 History: Going for her 17th top 40 entry here, Grande’s newest track will give her three hits in the region simultaneously.

BENNY BLANCO, HALSEY & KHALID – “Eastside” (Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
Album: TBA (2018)
Past T40 History: Though it’s his first single as an artist, Blanco has written or co-written several dozen top 40 entries since 2008.

CHARLIE PUTH – “The Way I Am” (Artist Partner/Atlantic)
Album: VoiceNotes (2018)
Past T40 History: Puth’s fourth single from his sophomore set follows the Kehlani-assisted “Done For Me”, which peaked at #16.

Next week: Zedd & Elley Duhé look to keep the panel “Happy”, but Childish Gambino has some “Magic” up his sleeve. Where will they land on the leaderboard? Find out next Tuesday.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (July 22, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. We have the newest report Taylor-made for your viewing pleasure, so let’s check out this week’s top pop results:

A REPUTABLE NUMBER ONE: Well, as much as I thought Ariana Grande would be spending a second week atop the pop list with “No Tears Left To Cry”, it wasn’t meant to be, as she falls from 1-4 on the current chart. Of course, that means we have a new #1 song this week, performed by another female soloist: “Delicate” by Taylor Swift, making a leap from 5-1. (That move isn’t a record, but it’s still a big one!) This is Swift’s tenth #1 song at the format and the second from her Reputation album, following the one week for “Look What You Made Me Do” in October of last year. The release also chalks up its fourth consecutive week at #1 on the Hot AC survey, her longest stay at the top since the six-week run for “Blank Space” in December 2014 and January 2015. (Its first two weeks there fell within the holiday freeze period.) Back on the Top 40 list, look out for Maroon 5‘s “Girls Like You”, featuring Cardi B, to make a run at the top next week, given its significant gain this week over last week.

“THE WAY” TO CHART SUCCESS: With four former top 40 titles purged from the chart this weekend, there’s a ton of action to cover on the survey. Leading the four entries into the top 40, Drake makes an enormous move from 42-20 with the third pop single off his Scorpion album, “In My Feelings”. It’s his 24th top 40 hit at the format since 2009. Performers Ella Mai, Juice WRLD and Abir all score their first top 40 singles this week, Mai with “Boo’d Up” (44-35), WRLD with “Lucid Dreams” (49-36) and Abir with a feature on Cash Cash‘s “Finest Hour” (43-40), respectively, which also becomes the trio’s third top 40 tune since 2014. Other radio formats have been supporting all three songs prior to their debuts here: “Boo’d” and “Lucid” have been pulling in substantial airplay at the Rhythmic and Urban formats, while “Finest” remains at #1 on the Dance chart.

A total of five songs are new to the top 50 this week, including three that are going for adds this Tuesday: Ariana Grande‘s “God Is A Woman” (#41), Charlie Puth‘s “The Way I Am” (#43) and Benny Blanco, Halsey and Khalid‘s “Eastside” (#49). The Add Lib recap is the place to find those results and more of the Most Added tracks of the week, which goes up at 7PM (EDT) that evening. Of the five soloists on those three entries, only one is new to the survey: producer and songwriter Blanco, who has previously composed big records for performers like Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Maroon 5. This week’s update also marks the debut of “Broken” by Lovelytheband at #46, a recent six-week #1 on the Alternative list. Finally, at #48, Khalid appears on yet another collaboration called “Ocean”, this time around with Martin Garrix. Next week should be equally as hectic, with several songs being removed due to declining spins and, for at least one of them, age of it. Who will land a new song on the chart? Find out a week from today.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (July 17, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: will the juicy jam from Juice WRLD leap over the current hits by Drake and Justin Timberlake to take the Most Added title, making his “Dreams” a reality? Time to wake up and add ’em up:

TRYIN’ TO GET THE “FEELINGS” AGAIN: No, Barry Manilow won’t be making a surprise comeback to the Top 40 survey anytime soon. (You know, he hasn’t charted here since 1984 for a reason… although, I do enjoy a little bit of “Read ‘Em And Weep” now and again. Shhh!) Drake‘s “In My Feelings” leads the week’s Top 40 report for the second consecutive week, following its tied finish with Justin Timberlake‘s “SoulMate” last week. Drake grabs 53 new stations, while Timberlake takes another 40.

The best-performing song out of the small bunch of impacting titles this week is “Lucid Dreams” by newcomer Juice WRLD, new at 34 stations for a third place finish. The track is building nicely on the Rhythmic and Urban surveys, as the streaming totals for it remain impressive across the major services.

Some of next week’s impacting songs entered the top five on the current adds update, as “The Way I Am” by Charlie Puth (fourth place, 27 stations) and “Eastside” by benny blanco, Halsey and Khalid (sixth place, 25 stations) are off to a very strong start. It should be a similar story next Tuesday, when both future hits should repeat in the region with larger sums. Of course, those singles will be competing against the new one from Ariana Grande, “God Is A Woman”, which is also on the schedule. Can this trinity of tunes lead to a divine top three? Stay tuned.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. DRAKE, “In My Feelings” (YMCMB/Republic)
2. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, “SoulMate” (RCA)
3. JUICE WRLD, “Lucid Dreams” (Grade A/Interscope)
4-T. BEBE REXHA, “I’m A Mess” (Warner Bros.)
4-T. CHARLIE PUTH, “The Way I Am” (Artist Partner/Atlantic)
6. BENNY BLANCO, HALSEY & KHALID, “Eastside” (Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
7. ELLA MAI, “Boo’d Up” (Interscope)
8-T. CLEAN BANDIT featuring DEMI LOVATO, “Solo” (Big Beat/RRP)
8-T. KYGO featuring MIGUEL, “Remind Me To Forget” (Ultra/RCA)
10. TIESTO & DZEKO featuring PREME and POST MALONE, “Jackie Chan” (Casablanca/Republic)
