RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (July 16, 2017)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Celebrate National Ice Cream Day with a bit of a selection of creamy Top 40 treats, made just for you to devour. Hey, it’s nice to know that something else is dripping besides the Russia investigation today. Anyways, enjoy these scrumptious stats:

SECONDS, SEÑORES?: Staying at #1 for the second week, it’s the tasty trio of Luis FonsiDaddy Yankee and Justin Bieber with the remix of “Despacito”. It’s likely to spend a tenth week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, which will be announced tomorrow. A recent Latin-based certification of the song boasted a huge 55x Platinum figure, or 3.3 million single-equivalent units. ¡Ay, caramba! Bieber has now spent a dozen weeks at #1 (over six songs – three main-credited, three features) since the fall of 2015. There’s still no word on when his next album will drop, but for all those Beliebers reading this post, I’m sure you wanted it yesterday, right?

The battle for the next #1 on the pop survey appears to be a three-horse race at the moment, pitting Halsey‘s “Now Or Never” (in at #4 again) against Shawn Mendes‘s “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” (up 6-5) and Imagine Dragons“Believer” (up 10-6). It’s going to be a few weeks before someone else ranks at the top spot, so check back to see how the growth of these singles develops. Do you think any of them will push for a Spanglish remix to reach #1? A collaboration with Bieber? It is not very original, but it may just do the trick…

HOW TO GET A SIX-PACK: No need to hit the gym twenty times a week and eat zero calories per day; this six-pack is all about a set of chart debuts, six of them in total, making the top 50 for the first time on this week’s update. Those six songs are led by Zedd & Liam Payne‘s “Get Low”, which hits a high of #39. It’s the tenth top 40 hit for Zedd, and the second solo entry for Payne, who stays at #19 for a second week with the Quavo-assisted “Strip That Down”. Just below that, Kesha‘s “Praying” is proving to be a holy hit, as it debuts at #41. It’s likely to become her 13th top 40 hit next week, and her first since 2014. Also, if you haven’t watched the video for her new album cut “Woman”, featuring The Dap-Kings Horns, go check it out on YouTube or VEVO. She did that.

Impacting at the format this week, along with “Praying”, is Demi Lovato‘s “Sorry Not Sorry”, which starts at #46. The performer is also featured on “No Promises” by Cheat Codes, which advances 25-23 in its 13th week in the top 40. Entering at #47, Hey Violet is on the hunt for their third top 40 single with “Hoodie”. The song has nothing to do with Hoodie Allen, who reached #26 in early 2015 with the Ed Sheeran-assisted “All About It”. Jonas Blue certainly isn’t blue over “Mama” coming in at #49, which features a chart newcomer named William Singe. It’s not a hot Genesis or Spice Girls remake, though I’m a fan of both songs and groups! Finally, the duo Ayo & Teo sneaks into the top 50 at #50 with “Rolex”. Unfortunately, time is running out for the brothers, literally, as the track loses nearly 20% of its spins from last week. Can someone let the Timex Social Club know that we need them back?
