RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 22, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. The ho-ho-hot stats may be slowing down a bit temporarily, but there’s still plenty to talk about. Here’s what’s popping at the Top 40 format this week:

CIRCLING BACK AROUND: Five weeks ago, it was the #1 song at the format. Now, it’s back at the top. Post Malone‘s “Circles” leads the list for the second nonconsecutive week. The global hit remains at #8 on the Hot AC radio survey, with additional action at several other formats.

Ant Saunders leads a pack of three new songs in the top 40 this week, climbing from 44-38 with “Yellow Hearts”. It’s his first tune to reach the region. The collaboration “Walking”, off the most recent compilation from record label 88rising, climbs from 45-39. It’s the first top 40 entry for its two lead performers, Joji and Jackson Wang, the fourth solo for Swae Lee and the eighth for Major Lazer. Finishing it off, the brothers known as AJR move from 42-40 with their fourth top 40 song at the format, “Dear Winter”.

The only new top 50 debut this week is the emerging TikTok hit “Falling”, the first charting song for Trevor Daniel, which lands at #50. It should reach the top 40 sometime next month.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (December 10, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Harry Styles is adored by his many fans and Top 40 programmers alike, as his latest solo single has a big win on the last report of the year. Let’s add ’em up:

A STYLISH END TO THE YEAR: It’s the final impact date for the year and the decade, so some adoration for the format seems like a good way to head out with a bang. Harry Styles is back with the first radio single from his upcoming album Fine Line: “Adore You” blasts onto the list with a massive 169 adds on impact. Just in case you were wondering, “Sign Of The Times” started with 127 adds in its first week in April 2017, which was previously his largest one-week total as a solo artist. “Adore” made the top 40 by last Sunday’s published update, so expect a significant jump up the chart by this weekend.

Billie Eilish‘s “Everything I Wanted” and Ant Saunders‘s “Yellow Hearts” also impacted at the format today, though both songs have already seen some solid action here in the last month. Eilish finished in second place with 56 stations, while Saunders tied for fifth with 16.

Established hits by Arizona Zervas, Blackbear and The Weeknd are among those returning to the top ten on the report.

The usual Tuesday night adds recap will return in January once singles begin impacting again, but until then, you can still read our Sunday night recap for all the latest chart stats from the pop world. Happy holidays!

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 8, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. As we mourn the death of singer and rapper Juice WRLD at the young age of 21, here’s what’s popping at the Top 40 format this week:

A “GOOD” LIFE: Lizzo‘s “Good As Hell”, with a very small loss in spins, holds at #1 on the Top 40 chart for a third week. The big hit is still in positive territory on both the Rhythmic (up 8-7) and Hot AC (up 11-9) radio charts. It appears that “Water Me”, a single that Lizzo originally released in 2017, will be splashing onto the airwaves at all three formats soon. (It has about 115 spins across the formats this week.)

Harry Styles scores his fourth top 40 hit outside of One Direction with the song that debuts at #33, “Adore You”. The single can be found on his upcoming album Fine Line, due on Friday. (It’s not a cover of the song that Miley Cyrus took to #15 in 2014.) Two other songs from the project, “Lights Up” and “Watermelon Sugar”, are continuing to receive minor airplay from several stations.

Climbing from 43-40, the Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin are new to the region with “Ritmo (Bad Boys For Life)”. It’s the 19th top 40 single at the format for the group and their first since 2011. Additionally, it’s the sixth top 40 hit for Balvin, who’s proving to be a popular collaborator as of late: he’s been featured on minor chart entries for DJ Snake and Major Lazer in the last few weeks.

The only top 50 entry of note is a viral hit that was driven by the video app TikTok: “Yellow Hearts” by Ant Saunders lands at #48 this week. It’s his first chart record and impacts on Tuesday.
