NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of August 25, 2017

Goin’ four the top.

I know what you’re saying — there are people not named Taylor Swift releasing music this week? Shocking, right? Here are the major releases you need to know for this Friday:

FIFTH HARMONY – Fifth Harmony (iTunes)
The current quartet, formerly quintet, is “Down” on their luck this era, as the lead single from their latest studio album stumbled on the charts. However, even without Camila Cabello in the mix, their fanbase remains strong and should lead them to a fairly solid debut. No new single from the set has been serviced to radio, though that could change following their VMA performance.

OLD DOMINION – Happy Endings (iTunes)
They’re at #1 on Country radio at the moment with “No Such Thing As A Broken Heart”, but they will be breaking into the charts in a nice position. The Nashville quintet, whose last album gave them three #1 songs on that airplay chart, is looking to reach the top ten on the Billboard 200 (and #1 on the format-specific list) for the first time.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE – Villians (iTunes)
In 2013, this group’s last album became their first #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Now, with “The Way You Used To Do” having a good run in the top 15 on the Alternative survey, they could be headed for a second chart-topper on the Billboard 200. Watch out for it.

THE WAR ON DRUGS – A Deeper Understanding (iTunes)
The Philadelphia group, in its major label debut, is already garnering some great reviews for its latest set. Their previous album’s top 30 peak should easily be eclipsed by wherever this one lands, thanks to a top ten Triple A hit in “Holding On”.

More albums out this week: Action Bronson‘s Blue Chips 7000 (iTunes), Andrew Belle‘s Dive Deep (iTunes), A$AP Mob‘s Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy (iTunes), Elliot Root‘s Conjure (iTunes), Picture This‘s Picture This (iTunes), PVRIS‘s All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell (iTunes), The Cadillac Three‘s Legacy (iTunes)

More EPs out this week: Angels & Airwaves‘s We Don’t Need To Whisper (Acoustic) (iTunes), Blake Shelton‘s Live (From The Wildhorse Saloon) (iTunes), Sam Tinnesz‘s Babel (iTunes), Timeflies‘s Too Much (iTunes), Welshly Arms‘s Legendary (iTunes)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 7/9 – 7/15/17

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

AARON TAOS – “Not Over Yet” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Taos is certainly making his mark on the Rewind this year, having previously been featured with a pair of top tracks: “Off My Mind” in January and “These Days” in May. As the title says, his days of my enjoying his tunes are not over yet, as he releases another bop.

_____

JOHN SPLITHOFF featuring MADISON RYANN WARD – “Show Me” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s been over a year since Splithoff released his last new single, the smooth and delectable “Sing To You”, which has now achieved a super impressive 20 million streams on Spotify. This R&B-influenced pop collaboration steers him in a fresh, but lovable, direction.

_____

ZAYDE WØLF – “Brave” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This Nashville singer and songwriter last appeared on the Rewind about a year ago, but several tracks from 2016’s Golden Age were featured on PGTC’s Spotify playlists. The anthemic pop cut has a nice hook and some cool builds in production. It’s a winner to me!

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
ANDREW BELLE – “Honey And Milk” (SoundCloud)
TRENTON – “In The Summer Light” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 6/4 – 6/10/17

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

ANDREW BELLE – “Down” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Seems like we’ve had a lot of radio singles with the word “down” in their titles recently, so I guess it’s only right to spotlight a digital song that gets “down” with what’s headed up. Of Belle’s set of stand-alone singles during the last year, this is my favorite one so far.

_____

KYLE REYNOLDS – “Friday Saturday Sunday” (iTunes) (Spotify)
So far this year, Nashville singer/songwriter Reynolds has appeared as the featured artist on two solid songs, but it’s his first main-credited single for 2017 that serves future pop perfection for the weekend (as if the title wasn’t a dead giveaway.) It’s pretty catchy!

_____

SMALLPOOLS – “Million Bucks” (iTunes) (Spotify)
After parting ways with RCA, this Los Angeles trio is back to rock the charts with their forthcoming independent EP, The Science Of Letting Go. Though this doesn’t approach “Over & Over” or “Karaoke” for me yet, it fits nicely with their usual aesthetic and sound.

_____

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
BROADHURST – “Status Quo” (SoundCloud)
Mikey Wax – “Never Letting You Go” (SoundCloud)
Rooney – “Second Chances” (SoundCloud)
Wanderer – “Call Me Crazy (Acoustic)” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 10/23 – 10/29

Record Rewind - October 30, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

DAN OWEN – “Moonlight” (iTunes) (Spotify)
A few months ago, Owen did some damage on a number of Viral charts with a lovely ballad called “Made To Love You”. It stands at over 1.7 million plays to date on Spotify. His Open Hands And Enemies EP reveals more to the artist, including this standout song.

_____

GREAT GOOD FINE OK – “Get Away” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Jon Sandler and Luke Moellman have been doing their thing for some time now, and with a new EP due at the top of the year, it’s a release to look forward to, especially with the consistency of their previous two EPs. This single is another catchy electropop tune.

_____

JESSE RUBEN – “Scared Of America” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Ruben provided some sunny pop rays with his delightful “First Day Of Summer” in mid-July, but this release is much more serious in tone. It’s real life, and it’s raw. Released in acoustic form, rather than a studio cut, it underscores the solemn nature of the tales.

_____

SLOW SUGAR – “Shotgun” (iTunes) (Spotify)
They might have slow in their act name, but this New York City duo is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. This is their third track to appear on the Rewind since August, and it’s a wicked musical weapon that pierces the pop world in all its edgy glory. Great song.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Heart In Slo Mo” (iTunes) (Spotify)
After a solid run of four EP cuts to be included in the Rewind, let’s extend that total to five. Featured on You Would Have Loved It Here, which came out two days ago, “Heart” is Bobbie Allen in her element, gliding over the beat of a new wave-influenced winner.

_____

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
ANDREW BELLE – “You” (SoundCloud)
JAKIL – “Unforgivable” (SoundCloud)
SCOTT QUINN – “Delicate” (SoundCloud)
YOUNG TIDES – “Easy Love” (SoundCloud)
