Adam’s Top 100 of 2014: #10 – MAGIC!, “Rude”

The cream of the pop!

The cream of the pop for 2014.

Another year is in the books and it’s time for the annual listing of the 100 biggest songs that ranked among my weekly top 40 chart from December 2013 to November 2014. It was magical year full of MAGIC! and “Magic” and a lovely twelve months of lovable hits from James Blunt and The Fray. We went “home” with A Great Big World and Andy Grammer, spun around in a “dance” with Milky Chance and Walk The Moon and ended up here with all that was awesome in the year we called 2014.

Peak positions listed are as of the last chart included in the year dated November 30, 2014. Those entries marked with a plus sign (+) had not yet reached their peak position as of the date. Ties in points were broken based on peak, number of weeks at peak and number of weeks in the top 40.

Could this be the MAGIC! at last?

010. MAGIC!, “Rude” (662 points)
Writers: Nasri Atweh, Adam Messinger, Mark Pellizzer, Ben Spivak, Alex Tanas / Producer: Messinger
Label: RCA

Debut Date: December 8, 2013
Peak Date: March 16, 2014
Peak: #2 for one week
Weeks on Chart: 26

Just a few years ago, Canadians Nasri Atweh and Adam Messinger were known to the industry as a successful production duo called The Messingers, creating Adam’s Top 40 hits for acts like New Kids On The Block (“Summertime”, #4 – 2008) and Kris Allen (“The Vision Of Love” – #21 in 2012.) Last year, they became one half of a quartet that was heavily influenced by reggae rockers The Police when creating their own sound, a sound that would (ahem) magically move the needle.

What started as a huge hit in Australia and New Zealand sailed across the world and eventually made it to the States, where it spent six weeks at #1 over the summer. For many, it was the Song Of The Summer. Sure, a number of critics weren’t into the song, but why did they have to be so rude? It’s catchy, it’s fun, and a little bit goofy too. After debuting on my top 40 late last year, “Rude” spent a week at #2 in March and exited in June, spending a half a year on the chart.

It remains to be seen whether MAGIC! will have an international smash beyond their signature song. With the truncated run of “Let Your Hair Down” at U.S. radio and the minimal results it produced, this era is likely done for them. However, I would not count them out in the long run. Between the tried and true team of Atweh and Messinger and what they’re capable of, the group may cast their spell on us once again when it’s least expected.
