RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (April 14, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. The game of thrones (at least on the Top 40 chart) isn’t seeing much action this week, but that’ll change next time around. Until then, here’s what’s popping on the survey:

SIXES AND SEVENS: As noted last week, Ariana Grande‘s “7 Rings” secures a sixth week at #1 on the Top 40 chart, which now becomes her longest-running #1 single at the format ever. However, this will be its last week at the summit, as the Jonas Brothers fly from 6-2 this week with the blazing “Sucker”, which will pass Grande’s big hit in the next few days. When it reaches the top, it will become the first #1 song at any format for the group.

Speaking of these three talented brothers, their latest single “Cool” moves from 43-25 on the chart, marking their eighth top 40 song to date. It’s the highest of three new entries in the region this week, though the other two tracks are well below it. One of them jumps into the entire top 50 at #37: “Boy With Luv”, the first collaboration by K-pop sensation BTS and singer Halsey. It’s the fourth time in the top 40 for the septet and the tenth entry for the featured performer. The track easily reached #1 on iTunes upon release. Julia Michaels and Niall Horan also edge into the top 40 this week, up 41-40 with “What A Time”. It’s the fifth top 40 single for each of them, the latter artist earning his fifth solo entry (which compliments his 13 as a member of One Direction.)

Three further entries in the top 50 this week are led by newcomer Kiana Ledé, who checks in at #46 with “Ex”. You’ll find it closing in on the top ten at the Rhythmic radio format. Ciara earns her first top 50 title since 2009 with “Thinkin Bout You”, new at #48. At #49, we also have the newest solo hit for a second One Direction alum: Louis Tomlinson is back with “Two Of Us”. The tune could earn him the third top 40 solo entry of his career in the coming weeks.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 20, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Do these radio hits ring a bell? They should. In fact, they could ring seven of them. Let’s see what’s popping this Sunday:

“THANK” BEFORE U SPEAK: Coming off a great six-week run at #1 for Panic! At The Disco‘s song “High Hopes”, the Top 40 survey was ready for a new chart-topper. So, thanks are due to Ariana Grande‘s “thank u, next”, rising 2-1 this week. The hit is the sixth #1 of her career at this format and follows just weeks after “breathin”, a cut off her Sweetener album, stalled at #2 for four long weeks without ever hitting the top. The latter track slides to #5 this week, as Grande’s “7 rings” (released on Friday) has a huge entry at #27. These are, indeed, a few of her favorite things. (There’ll be plenty more where that came from in the coming months.)

Three massive tunes leap well into the top 40 this week, led by “Lost In The Fire” by Gesaffelstein and The Weeknd, up from 45-24. It was last Tuesday’s Most Added release at the format. While the former claims his first top 40 entry, the latter now has his 10th song to reach that section of the list. As mentioned above, Grande lands at #27 with “7 rings”, marking her 20th top 40 hit. The song received hourly airplay at many radio stations on Friday, though it should sport solid gains in the next few days. Additionally, the hit “Dancing With A Stranger” takes to the floor at #32 for Sam Smith and Normani. The collaboration becomes the 11th top 40 tune for Smith and the second solo entry for Normani, who previously charted with the group Fifth Harmony. Normani’s “Love Lies”, a collaboration with Khalid, spent two weeks at #1 in September.

Headed lower, “Damn” by LIVVIA (#44) and “Chances” by the Backstreet Boys (#48) land in the region. This coming Friday, the latter act releases their first studio album since 2013, DNA, which also features “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, a #16 hit last August.
