RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (October 1, 2017)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Yom Kippur has ended for the year, and the fasting is complete. Still, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hungry for the taste of top 40 stats on a Sunday night. Ooh, it’s delicious. Have a look at this week’s #1 song and all the notable debuts in the top 50:

ALL TIME “SLOW”: Niall Horan‘s “Slow Hands” wiggles its fingers, and with some musical magic, collects a second week at #1 on the CHR/Top 40 chart. It’s the 21st week in the top 40 for the song. It loses a little over 400 spins in the last seven days, which is bound to increase during the next week, though it certainly had an impressive run to the top. Horan still has a chance to top the Hot AC chart before all is said and done, as “Slow” rises from 4-3 this week. The competition may be fierce, but given its Top 40 success, it could sneak in some time at #1.

The Irish singer’s “Too Much To Ask”, the third single from Flicker, ranks just below the top 50 this week, and is poised to reach the region before its impact date on October 10. Horan’s former bandmate, Liam Payne, advances 3-2 with the Quavo-assisted “Strip That Down”. Two members of the same act replacing each other at #1 is quite the rarity. Should it occur next week, prepare for a bit of Top 40 trivia to come your way…

MALONE AGAIN (NATURALLY): Four new songs break into the top 50 on this week’s CHR/Top 40 chart, lead by a strong #41 debut for Post Malone‘s “rockstar”, featuring 21 Savage. The hot track, which soared to #1 on iTunes upon release, makes a giant 42-18 jump on this week’s Rhythmic chart, while it also charges into the top 40 on the Urban survey. A couple of spots below that, a new single from Khalid enters the top 50. “Young Dumb & Broke”, which is currently #9 on the Rhythmic chart, bows in at #43. In a couple of days, Khalid’s collaboration with Marshmello, called “Silence”, impacts at the format, just a week after “Young” had its impact week. We’ll see if the two songs can slay the charts together, or if they’ll cancel each other out. (I’m betting on the former.)

As it climbs to #34 on the Hot AC survey, “Dusk Till Dawn” debuts at #47 on this week’s CHR/Top 40 chart for ZAYN and Sia. The tune marks the fourth solo top 50 entry for the former One Direction member, though it reaches the countdown in the same week that another of the group’s members, Louis Tomlinson, is purged from the chart with “Back To You”, featuring Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals. Lastly, at #50, duo Axwell Λ Ingrosso scores their second chart single of the year with “More Than You Know”. It follows the Kid Ink-assisted “I Love You”, which got as high as #28 at the end of April. Fortunately, the two guys weren’t chasing after remaking the Martika hit of the same name; her “More Than You Know” peaked at #16 in March 1989.
