RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 8, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. As we mourn the death of singer and rapper Juice WRLD at the young age of 21, here’s what’s popping at the Top 40 format this week:

A “GOOD” LIFE: Lizzo‘s “Good As Hell”, with a very small loss in spins, holds at #1 on the Top 40 chart for a third week. The big hit is still in positive territory on both the Rhythmic (up 8-7) and Hot AC (up 11-9) radio charts. It appears that “Water Me”, a single that Lizzo originally released in 2017, will be splashing onto the airwaves at all three formats soon. (It has about 115 spins across the formats this week.)

Harry Styles scores his fourth top 40 hit outside of One Direction with the song that debuts at #33, “Adore You”. The single can be found on his upcoming album Fine Line, due on Friday. (It’s not a cover of the song that Miley Cyrus took to #15 in 2014.) Two other songs from the project, “Lights Up” and “Watermelon Sugar”, are continuing to receive minor airplay from several stations.

Climbing from 43-40, the Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin are new to the region with “Ritmo (Bad Boys For Life)”. It’s the 19th top 40 single at the format for the group and their first since 2011. Additionally, it’s the sixth top 40 hit for Balvin, who’s proving to be a popular collaborator as of late: he’s been featured on minor chart entries for DJ Snake and Major Lazer in the last few weeks.

The only top 50 entry of note is a viral hit that was driven by the video app TikTok: “Yellow Hearts” by Ant Saunders lands at #48 this week. It’s his first chart record and impacts on Tuesday.
