RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (April 21, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. We have an egg-celent look at the pop radio chart as Easter comes to a close. So, break out the musical matzah, because here’s what’s popping on the survey:

THREE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS: 11 years and six months after they first entered the top 40 at the format with “S.O.S.”, which got as high as #23, the Jonas Brothers earn their first #1 at the Top 40 format with “Sucker”, moving from 2-1. The three brothers join other male sibling trios to reach the top of the pop chart, including the Bee Gees and Hanson. They also join a number of acts to pick up their first #1 song more than ten years after first appearing on the Top 40 list, which includes big names like Green Day, Santana, Tina Turner and the most recent example from last year, Panic! At The Disco. Want even more “Cool” news from the guys? Well, that hit of theirs is up from 25-19 this week and it’s moving quickly. Watch out for the band on Saturday Night Live in a few weeks.

Passing over and into the top 40 this week, there are three new songs in the region, led by “Chlorine” from Twenty One Pilots. It’s up from 41-38, marking the duo’s fifth top 40 entry on the Top 40 list. It also leads the new Alternative chart update, up 2-1. Moving from 43-39, “Juice” squeezes into the top 40 for Lizzo. It’s her first chart appearance. The single is taken from her new album Cuz I Love You, which went to #1 on iTunes over the weekend. Finally, entering the entire chart at #40, a new version of “Con Calma” hits the survey for Daddy Yankee, Katy Perry and Snow. Of course, “Con” samples Snow’s biggest track to date, 1993’s “Informer”, a #2 smash on the CHR chart in April of that year. This marks the fourth, 26th and third top 40 entry, respectively, for each artist.

Additionally, we have three new tunes hopping into the top 50 this week. As “When The Party’s Over” continues its ascent up the list from 26-23, Billie Eilish bounces onto the survey at #42 with “Bad Guy”. It continues to be a huge sales and streaming record. The airplay for it thus far is unsolicited; it hasn’t been officially serviced to the format, as the label continues to work “When”. Landing at #44, “Wake Up” pairs Travis Scott and The Weeknd on the former’s new single off his chart-topping Astroworld album. Coming in at #47, we also have the debut of “Medicine”, a collaboration from Jennifer Lopez and French Montana. The two performers previously worked together on a song titled “I Luh Ya Papi”, which earned some airplay here, but did not reach the top 50.
