RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 16, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Don’t lie… you love to check out all the huge action on the pop airwaves. Well, this week, we’ve got plenty of new figures and interesting stats. Here’s what’s popping this Sunday:

WHAT LIES AHEAD: A huge congrats is in order for “Love Lies” by Khalid x Normani from the soundtrack to Love, Simon, the new #1 song on this week’s Top 40 chart. It reaches the top in its 25th week in the top 40, which ties for the second-slowest run to #1 in the plays-per-week era with 2012’s “Give Your Heart A Break” by Demi Lovato. Of course, that record is held by a song which hit the top in its 26th week: 2016’s “Here”, the debut single by Alessia Cara. Both acts earn their second #1 song on the pop chart, with Normani scoring her first solo chart-topper, having previously reached the summit with pop quintet Fifth Harmony. “Lies” has the distinction of being the first male-female duet from a movie to reach #1 at the format since 1993, when “A Whole New World”, a duet between Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle from Aladdin, spent three weeks there. Do Khalid and Normani get a second ride to #1? With a little magic, and a lot of love, it’s certainly a possibility.

NEW TO THE CITY: As songs by Loud Luxury and Ariana Grande enter this week’s top 40, the latter becoming Grande’s 18th single to make the region, another pair of songs reach the top 50 for the first time. Receiving a jolt at #44, the duo Silk City and pop queen Dua Lipa are in with “Electricity”. Silk City consists of two known musicians and producers, Diplo and Mark Ronson. In a solid finish on Tuesday, it was the Most Added song at Top 40 radio and should shock the top 40 sometime within the next week. On that same report, there were also a number of early adds for the song that bows at #49: “Song About You” by Mike Posner. That hit officially heads for adds at Alternative, Hot AC and Top 40 radio this week and could very well score the Most Added title at all of the formats in question. That being said, there is quite a bit of competition, so check back on Tuesday to see the final results. Posner is in the hunt for his second #1 at the format; two years ago, “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” spent two non-consecutive weeks atop the chart.
