RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (August 26, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. It’s the last chart update for August already! Where’s the time gone? While we try to figure out the answer to that one, check out this week’s hottest hits on the latest report:

FAREWELL TO “YOU”: As we return to the “Songs That Never Seem To Go Away” department, “Girls Like You” from Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B continues its run at #1 on the Top 40 chart for the fifth week. It’s the act’s longest run at #1 here since 2012, when “One More Night” collected eight weeks at the top between September and November of that year. “Girls” also has an enormous lead atop the Hot AC chart in its fourth week at the summit, more than 1,200 spins over the song in the runner-up position. However, the Top 40 list will finally see a new #1 next week, as the tune that’s been docked at #2 for four consecutive weeks, “Better Now” by Post Malone, makes it ascent to the top. Behind him, it’ll be a wild fall of potential #1 songs, so stay tuned!

“HIGH” EXPECTATIONS: It’s a nice week for collaborations making the top 40, as the newest releases by Logic featuring Ryan TedderTyga featuring Offset and Calvin Harris & Sam Smith all enter the region at the Top 40 format. For Harris and Smith, their single “Promises” bypasses the top 50 and goes straight into the top 40 at #40, becoming Harris’s 18th and Smith’s tenth single to make it this high. Additionally, Weezer scores their first top 40 hit since 2005 with their remake of Toto‘s “Africa”, rising 46-39.

Leading a parade of three top 50 debuts this week, Marshmello x Bastille‘s “Happier” is new at #41, about two dozen spins shy of the top 40. Though the latter group’s had some solid success on the Alternative radio chart, they’ve only managed to place two songs in the top 40 at this format: 2014’s “Pompeii”, which spent two weeks at #3 that March, and 2016’s “Good Grief”, which just reached #38 that November. Additionally, Panic! At The Disco‘s “High Hopes” (#47) and PRETTYMUCH‘s “Summer On You” (#49) are welcomed to the top 50; the former group is headed towards their fourth top 40 song here, while the latter group is hunting for their second such entry. Will they make it before the summer comes to a close? We’re pretty much unsure, but never say never, as it could surprise.
