Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. August is here, and the end of summer may be a hard subject to think about. However, there are still plenty of nice summer songs in the top 40, some of which should carry into the fall months. Let’s see what’s popping this Sunday:
THIS ONE’S FOR THE “GIRLS”: Girls run the world, and “Girls Like You” is still running the pop world, as the current hit from Maroon 5 and Cardi B has a strong hold at #1 for its second week. It eclipses the 19,000 spin mark, which is due in part to a panel shift last month that allowed several new stations to report to the format. “Girls” climbs from 3-1 at the Hot AC format, their 13th on that particular chart. Elsewhere, the track rises from 18-15 on the AC chart, while moving up one spot to #24 on the Rhythmic chart. Look out for Post Malone‘s “Better Now”, which vaults from 7-2 on the Top 40 list, following a weakened top five over the past few weeks. When it hits the top spot later this month, it will officially become Malone’s second #1 song of the 2018 calendar year.
“HAPPY” TO BE HERE: Blasting onto the countdown at #31, “Side Effects” pairs EDM duo The Chainsmokers with one of the frequent collaborators from their catalog, popular songwriter Emily Warren. It’s the ninth top 40 release for the two men, but just second for Warren, who was last credited as a featured artist on “Capsize” by pop duo FRENSHIP, which got as high as #21 for two weeks in November 2016. She was also heard (in an uncredited appearance) on another big hit by The Chainsmokers, “Paris”, which spent three weeks at #3 in April of last year. Newcomers Lovelytheband also break the top 40 with “Broken”, up 42-39. It held the #1 spot on the Alternative radio chart for six weeks this past spring. Lead singer Mitchy Collins just missed the top 40 four years ago as one half of the duo Oh Honey, whose “Be Okay” reached #46 on the Top 40 survey that June, spurred by satellite radio play and a sync on Glee.
Headed lower in the top 50, we find another four debuts, led by “Happy Now” from Zedd and Elley Duhé at #43. This track marks the latter performer’s first entry at the format. Tyga‘s current Rhythmic and Urban radio hit with Offset, “Taste”, is new at #47. It’s the first single by the lead artist to chart here in over three years; his prior entry, “Ayo”, a collaboration with Chris Brown, reached #27 in April 2015. New duo Social House takes “Magic In The Hamptons”, featuring Lil Yachty, into a magical spot at #48. Their first single has slowly crept its way onto the chart, having been released two months ago before its impact during the second week of July. Lastly, at #50, the first collaboration from Cheat Codes and Little Mix, “Only You”, is now officially on the Top 40 chart. On the U.K. singles chart, it’s still on the rise, having reached a new peak of #14 on the most recent update.
