RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (June 17, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Hope you enjoyed a bit of Father’s Day fun! Here’s the daddy of all Top 40 reports (well, not really), our radio recap of parental pop and other hot bops:

THE POST WITH THE MOST: It’s a second week at #1 for Post Malone and the Ty Dolla $ign-assisted “Psycho”, which is up a little over 200 spins from last week to cross the 16,000 spin mark. It moves from 40-37 on this week’s Hot AC chart. Malone’s new single off his Beerbongs & Bentleys set, “Better Now”, rises from 34-27 in its second week in the top 40, which means the performer might be back at #1 sooner than you think! (“Better” goes for adds at the Hot AC format next Monday.) He’s also a featured artist on a song that impacts at the Top 40 format this coming Tuesday: “Jackie Chan”, a song by Tiësto & Dzeko that also features Preme. (The original version by Preme and Malone appears on the former’s album, Light Of Day, which was released in early May.) Is there enough room for all this Malone madness? Will he suffer from overexposure? Am I only capable of asking endless questions? Uh… I think there will be some interesting action for all three records as June and July go on, so make sure you’re watching the charts!

DRIVE MY CARA: One of the only chart debuts of note this week blasts in at #37, which comes from Alessia Cara and “Growing Pains”. It’s the first single from her forthcoming sophomore album, due sometime later this year. “Growing” gives the performer her seventh top 40 song at the format, four of which have gone to #1, and that’s a pretty great run so far. Will it become her fifth? Seems like it’s too early to tell, but I’ll keep you posted. Meanwhile, the lone top 50 entry on this week’s chart is a collaboration from Noah Cyrus and MAX, “Team”, just sneaking in at #50. The acoustic ballad also enters at #47 on the Hot AC survey. Neither performer’s looking at an album release in the near future: Cyrus’s long-delayed NC-17 album, which was announced in January 2017, has never materialized, and MAX’s duo Party Pupils just released a new single earlier this month.
