RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 3, 2017)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Yes, the days are getting shorter and colder, but think of all those hot hits burning all day and night on the charts! That’s where I come in. Here’s this week’s pop report:

‘LO GOES HIGH: Gaining another 1,000 spins over last week, Camila Cabello‘s “Havana”, featuring rapper Young Thug, gets a second week at #1 at the CHR format. It’s also up 7-4 at the Rhythmic format, though it’s too soon to tell if it’ll reach the top there. For more positive pop news, “Havana” rises a notch to #12 on the Hot AC chart, where it had the largest gain in spins of any track in the top 40 this week, as it prepares to enter the top ten. Of course, with a remix featuring Daddy Yankee, the release is all over the three Spanish-dominated charts that Mediabase publishes as well, ranking the highest (#16) on the regular Spanish survey. Think it will go away anytime soon? Falso, amigos.

It appears that Halsey‘s “Bad At Love” (up 6-4 this week) and Ed Sheeran‘s “Perfect” (up 8-5) will be the next competitors for the top spot at the format during the coming weeks, the former leading the latter by about 900 spins. The former single may be affected by the singer’s new collaboration with G-Eazy called “Him & I”, which just misses at #51, while the latter got a boost on Friday with a new duet version that features Beyoncé. (Both the duet and the original versions of “Perfect” have held down the top two slots on iTunes since Friday.) What else can I say? With names like that, pop perfection is likely headed is way.

“WORK” IN PROGRESS: After stalling at #43 in October with the Nicki Minaj-assisted “You Already Know”, Fergie is back in the top 50 with the follow-up. Entering at #48, “A Little Work” is the second pop single from her recent album Double Dutchess. It’s been certified Double Cardboard in most countries, including here in the States. (Just kidding… but not really.) She returns to TV in about a month to host a new music competition show called The Four: Battle For Stardom, which debuts January 4 on FOX. Singer Ciara will be replacing her as the new host of the West Coast feed of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Will Fergie finally land a top 40 single here for the first time in three years? If it survives the holiday freeze, there’s a good possibility of that happening.

Just below Fergie’s latest pop entry is the first one for K-pop newcomers BTS. Their remix of “MIC Drop” comes in at #50. The new version was mixed by DJ/producer Steve Aoki, and includes a rap by Desiigner, who you may recall reached #20 in May/June of last year with “Panda”. It officially impacts at the format this Tuesday. The seven-member act has made a giant impact on the charts in South Korea, with many chart-topping albums, EPs and singles since 2014. With “MIC” poised to go much higher, the band could become the first K-pop group to break the top 40 at the format, as well as the first Korean act to enter the region since PSY in 2012.
