RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (July 2, 2017)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Wishing all the PGTC fans an early, but very happy Fourth Of July! I hope you get to spend some time with your family. I’ll certainly be relaxing, but only after I get to spend a bit of time in Chart Land. (It’s not quite Disney World, nor is it Six Flags, but it’s still worth an all-day pass.) So, as I settle into my inner tube and take a sip of sweet tea, here’s the actual tea on this week’s Top 40 rankings:

MORE REASONS TO “STAY”: Comfortably concluding its sixth week at the top spot is the second-longest running #1 of the year so far: “Stay” by Zedd and Alessia Cara. The global hit is up another notch to #6 at Hot AC radio this week, though it falls 16-20 at Rhythmic and 29-31 at AC. Once again, we have two songs staying in the countdown from top-to-bottom, with Noah Cyrus‘s “Stay Together” rebounding 41-40 (without a bullet) this week. Zedd’s follow-up with Liam Payne, “Get Low”, impacts here on July 11. I guess it’s safe to assume that the song will be out on or before July 7, so stay tuned for further details!

As long as specialty programming from the extended holiday weekend doesn’t affect it too severely, the red hot remix of “Despacito”, by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber, should grab the Top 40 throne next week. (This week, it stays at #2 for the second week.) Also of note, Halsey rises from 8-4 with “Now Or Never”. Her fourth chart hit is looking to become her second #1 at the format, following the ten big weeks that “Closer” (The Chainsmokers) held the top spot last year. Ed Sheeran‘s “Castle On The Hill” also reaches a new peak this week, climbing back up from 11-9. It previously went to #10, though it’s been sitting below the top ten for several weeks now.

MACKLE-MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM: After some strong early action from the pop panel, Macklemore‘s “Glorious” makes its glorious debut at #44 on this week’s Top 40 chart. The song features singer and songwriter Skylar Grey, who first hit the top 40 as Holly Brook on the Fort Minor single “Where’d You Go?”, which peaked at #2 (6/9-30/06 R&R) here. Without partner Ryan Lewis by his side, 34-year-old Macklemore is doing just fine, though I imagine the pair will be reunited at some point. (Break out the Peaches & Herb!) No word on a new album from the performer, but his only solo effort to date was released back in 2005.

As we celebrate the glory of our country (or, at least try to!) on the Fourth of July, feel free to include some “glory” titles on a playlist of yours. Just a handful have charted at the format, though they’re all pretty well-known: “Glory Days” (#3, 7/19/85 R&R) by Bruce Springsteen, “Blaze Of Glory” (#3, 9/7-14/90 R&R) by Jon Bon Jovi and “The Edge Of Glory” (6/26-7/3/11 MB) by Lady Gaga. Of course, we needn’t forget that glorious hit from The Karate Kid Part II, the two-week (7/25-8/1/86 R&R) chart-topper “Glory Of Love” by Peter Cetera. See, kids, stats are fun! (I need a social life, I know.)

FEELS SO WRITE: 2017 has been a giant year so far for Julia Michaels, having co-written four top 40 entries at the format, one being her own debut single. Now, she’s looking for more radio love with her latest track, “Uh Huh”, which enters at #50. The single’s first week of adds went well, as it took the fourth Most Added spot last Tuesday, while it also benefits from an early iHeartMedia add in their nationalized Premium Choice programming. Michaels’s Nervous System was pushed back from its initial release date, and a new date has yet to surface. (The eligibility period for 60th Grammy Awards goes through the end of September, so I’m sure the set’s due before then. After all, the girl’s gotta get her Best New Artist nod!)

Michaels also falls from 4-5 on this week’s chart with “Issues”, which reached that #4 peak in its 22nd week in the top 40. Talk about a long run! However, as I’ve noted before, DNCE‘s “Cake By The Ocean” (#2, 4/10-17/16 MB) has the Mediabase record for the song that totaled the most top 40 weeks before peaking, taking 27, but Edwin McCain‘s “I’ll Be” (#9, 10/2/98 R&R) holds the plays-per-week era record for the same achievement with its massive 33-week run. Drawn-out chart runs might be the new normal, but I think it’s time to shake things up, yes? (Who wants to make me a gatekeeper already?)
