ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (June 13, 2017)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: David Guetta and Justin Bieber easily get 2R attention with a big song for the summer, while Bruno Mars comes close to hitting the ceiling with a “Floor”. Pucker up those lips for a tasty treat, because this week’s Add Lib report is freshly served and topped with plenty of sprinkles:

GUETT USED TO IT: Chances are that if you’re not a fan of Justin Bieber, you’ll be throwing your radio out the window soon. Bieber is featured on two current top ten tracks (“Despacito (Remix)” and “I’m The One”) and is poised to grab a third spot with the Most Added record at the format today, “2U” by David Guetta. It starts at a giant 147 stations on impact. The Canadian superstar has sung on five #1 hits, both main-credited and featured, since “What Do You Mean?” (10/18/15 MB) from his Purpose album. It’s been nearly six years since Guetta reached the top of the pop chart with the Usher-assisted “Without You” (11/20-27/11 MB) from his Nothing But The Beat album, though the 49-year-old French DJ/producer has stayed active since then. Will these international stars with an international smash take a flight to #1, much like where Bieber’s other two hits appear to be headed? Could a backlash throw a wrench into those plans? Ooh, the possibilities… we’ll get back to you soon with what develops!

A FORMAT FLOORED: With the new Top 40 smash from his top-selling 24K Magic album, Bruno Mars slows things down on his way to the crown with “Versace On The Floor”. On impact, the track takes in 47 new stations, good for the runner-up slot on this week’s report. Mars’s hit ranked just below the top 50 on last Sunday’s published update, but it’s sure to make a splashy debut now. The luxury brand turns 40 years old next year, and it’ll probably be another 40 years until I can afford something from them! Four years ago, a separate single simply called “Versace”, performed by Migos, peaked at #11 (9/29/13 MB) on the Urban list. A Drake remix aided that song’s run, though it didn’t crossover to the pop format. Coming off a #1 hit in “That’s What I Like”, Mars has a bit of momentum at the moment, so look out for this retro gem to soundtrack those steamy summer nights in the heart of the season.
