ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (May 2, 2017)

Welcome to Add Lib, a new weekly report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: DJ Khaled is “One” to scream about this new collaboration, Katy Perry is hungry for a hot hit, Charlie Puth attracts some new believers and Hailee Steinfeld gets the “Most” out of her new single. It may be May, but you may proceed with viewing my recap of the top Top 40 singles getting that add coverage this Tuesday. Phew… that was a tongue-twister. Wrap your tongues (and ears) around these songs:

“ONE” ON ONE: Do you think that DJ Khaled identifies with the book/film Old Yeller? You know, at least the title of it? I think you’ll hear him loud and clear this week. His latest single, “I’m The One”, is the Most Added title at CHR/Top 40 radio. The track is new at 140 stations on impact, giving the 41-year-old performer his largest frame of adds at the format. While that total is notable, it falls just short of the PPW era record for his label, Epic: 157, established last March by Meghan Trainor‘s “No”, which reached #7. Justin Bieber, Quavo (of Migos, more below), Chance The Rapper and Lil Wayne all appear on the song, and Bieber is a huge part of why the single is a success out of the gate, as it competes with another single (a remix of “Despacito”, see below) that he features on. So, if you don’t like DJ Khaled or Justin Bieber, I would suggest staying away from your local pop outlet on the dial this summer. Hey, there’s always the jazz station…

LIFE GOES “BON”: What’s the recipe for a radio record? Katy Perry should know the answer to that; she’s been ranking at the format for almost nine years now. Her latest release, “Bon Appétit”, has a tasty turnout from the Top 40 panel, but second place is all that it’ll be serving this week. C’est la vie, kids. A total of 54 stations on the panel give it an add on impact. The track includes the latest struggle vocal rent-a-rappers, trio Migos, who have seemingly replaced Ty Dolla $ign‘s pointless features on a number of pop hits. (Seriously, kids, it’s 2017. Can we not write a proper middle eight?) Anyways, I shouldn’t be totally shady on this one, due to the fact that an edit without them is available to programmers. Anyways, I hope she has a perry good summer with this song. It’s a fun one. (Don’t go overboard on the cherry pie. There’s always the Warrant song.)

THE MOMENT OF PUTH: Singer and songwriter Charlie Puth proves he’s a chart survivor with a karate pop chop, making it on the Most Added report again with “Attention”. Upon impact, it’s new at 43 pop stations, landing it the third Most Added spot. It was recently promoted through an exhibit called The Attention Room in Los Angeles, which gave his fans the chance to step into an LED infinity tunnel that displays the brain’s reaction to receiving attention, while his song plays in the background. In other words, “Ooh! Look at the colors! Wait, who’s singing this song?” “Attention” is expected on his sophomore album, due sometime later this year. However, paying attention to my endless Survivor marathons on Spotify is optional. I can still bop to “Poor Man’s Son” and “American Heartbeat”, thank you very much.

DOING THE “MOST”: If you’re at or around my age, you know that when it comes to pop singles called “Most Girls”, we’re used to thinking that those girls want a man with the bling-bling, etc. It’s only natural, because we all love a great P!nk jam. Well, singer and actress Hailee Steinfeld is out to change that with her latest single, which grabs the fifth Most Added slot this week, starting out at 33 stations. The female empowerment anthem follows the Grey and Zedd-assisted “Starving”, which slowly reached a peak of #5 for three weeks earlier this year. Most girls are probably rooting for this one, and we’ll see how it does over the summer. The competition is pretty tough out there…
