Welcome to Add Lib, a new weekly report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Harry Styles sees the “Sign” (and it opened up the panel’s minds), belief powers some Imagine Dragons add activity, and the heat starts rising on Tinashe‘s “Flame”, and that’s no cheap trick. Don’t be cruel to a chart that’s true, even if you’re referencing a cover song from the fall of ’88. Anyways, fall into our radio report and get a pop punch for your Tuesday night:
HIT ‘EM UP, STYLES: Don’t be blu, Harry Styles. You didn’t clear the entire pop panel in your first week, but you done good there, kid. “Sign Of The Times” has a big week at CHR radio, scoring 127 adds on impact. That total is slightly less than the 129 add total of “Sign ‘O’ The Times”, the #6 hit (4/10-17/87 R&R) by Prince. Styles is the fourth member of One Direction to make the top 40 as a solo act, with Liam Payne now the lone member to not release any music outside of the band. (We’re waiting, hello!) In the top 30 already and making major gains, it’s looking like “Sign” will be a major hit into the summer. Also, yes, I still have the CD single of “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” that I bought back in 2001. I’m sure that Blu Cantrell will delight in knowing that she’s a tiny part of a chart recap for the first time in, well, a long time.
BLESSED ARE THE BELIEVERS: Anne Murray and Imagine Dragons probably have nothing in common, outside of the multi-year top 40 runs, of course. That being said, you could say that the CHR panel just fell in love again with the band, while the four men replied, “You needed us!” “Believer” grabs another 34 adds this week, which puts the single in the third Most Added spot on the latest report. It’s the current #1 song on the Alternative radio chart, a position that it’s held for three weeks now. The group only has one #1 single to date at the pop format, “Demons”, which spent a week at the top in December 2013. Will the guys make it to the top ten for the fourth time, or will they just have to imagine the result? I’m hoping it’s the former, but we’ll see soon.
“FLAME” ON THE SIDE OF THIS RACE: Some CHR programmers got a clue about Tinashe‘s new single this week, stoking that “Flame” to the tune of 16 stations and the ninth Most Added title. The singer has three top 40 tracks to date at the format, but none of the three have gone beyond a #20 peak. Perhaps we’ll need to get Professor Plum and Mrs. Peacock on the case… I bet the gatekeeper was in the conference room with the callout log. (Did I win?) Anyways, we’ll see if this fiery first shot at radio action has the means to keep the burning going in the coming weeks and months. Now, excuse me while I engage in my own kind of burning — some calories from all these Passover carbs!
