Chart Notes:

  • After two weeks at #1, Taylor Swift‘s “Style”, her third chart-topper in a row from 1989, is replaced at the top spot by Ellie Goulding‘s “Love Me Like You Do”, advancing 2-1. “Love” is taken from the soundtrack to Fifty Shades Of Grey, which continues to sell well despite the film’s front-loaded box office earnings. On my chart, this is the singer’s first time at #1, though she previously went to #1 at CHR radio in 2012 with “Lights” (which peaked at #9 on my top 40 during the year prior.) How long will she reign before a “King” or other chart royalty push her off the throne? Stay tuned!
  • The week’s Biggest Mover is from singer/songwriter Mat Kearney, who leaps 32-24 in his third week on the chart with “Billion”, one of his two songs currently in the countdown. That number, written out as 1,000,000,000, is the largest to appear in the title of a chart entry on the Hot 100. Two such songs are responsible for that record: 1973’s “Billion Dollar Babies” (#57) by Alice Cooper and 2010’s “Billionaire” (#4) by Travie McCoy and Bruno Mars. We’ll see if there’ll soon be this third song to add to the list.
  • Released last year, the first EP from BØRNS, titled Candy, got a hefty boost thanks to this Instagram post from a singer mentioned above (you know, the stylish one) and with a radio date in place, “Electric Love” finally makes it onto my list, new at #39 as the week’s Highest Debut. Singer and songwriter Garrett Borns is originally from Michigan and now based in California.
  • Also new to the survey this week is a quintet who call themselves North Of Nine. The five guys bow in at #40 with the current single from their EP Alive, titled “Can It Be You?” The track is currently being worked to Hot AC radio, but lead singer Jackson Guthy saw some minor CHR airplay last year with a song called “Young & Single”.
