The end of the year brings many a holiday song to the airwaves, and while the fear of getting lost in the shuffle may turn some acts away, there are others venturing out into the icy chart waters to try their luck at some frosty feedback. What singles will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are some of the releases being serviced in December on the AAA, Alternative and CHR formats in this month’s (abbreviated) Radio Report:
CHR (*) and HOT AC (**)
5 SECONDS OF SUMMER – “What I Like About You” (December 2) (*)
Since the original version just missed the top 40 in 1980 for rockers The Romantics, “Like” continues to be played at radio through cover versions and commercials, and now the Australian quartet updates it for yet another spin. A recent trade site banner highlights adds in several top ten markets for the new remake. Look for the official count on Tuesday.
HOODIE ALLEN featuring ED SHEERAN – “All About It” (December 2) (*)
Already in the top 50 at the CHR and Rhythmic (due in part to its On The Verge selection) formats, “All” is on its way to becoming a major hit in 2015 and the first significant one for the 26-year-old rapper Allen, born Steven Markowitz. It’s all paid off for the performers and social stars, further proof that two heads are better than one at this musical moment.
ALTERNATIVE (*) and AAA (**)
BAHAMAS – “All The Time” (December 9) (*)
If you’ve seen the Verizon commercial where actor James Franco falls off a building and then lands in slow motion, you have found the song that accompanies that advertisement. A 69-cent sale at iTunes propelled the single upward, though it has since fallen back due to the lack of airplay thus far. No worries: it has “all the time in the world” to rise once more.
COUNTING CROWS – “Earthquake Driver” (December 9) (**)
The AAA airwaves remain a welcome home for the California group’s Somewhere Under Wonderland album, including a recent top ten single in “Scarecrow”. Their followup is just as capable of hitting the region during the springtime when it can draw a little more traction here. Then again… who knows what Mother Nature has in store for 2015? Get shaking!
RYAN ADAMS – “Stay With Me” (December 16) (**)
Label: PAX-AM/Blue Note
Just popping up in the top 50 is the second single from Adams’s self-titled album from earlier this year, and no, it’s not a remake of a certain British soul singer’s international smash. (That would be rather intriguing if it was, however.) Given the early results, this should make for another lasting chart tune for the 40-year-old North Carolina singer/songwriter.
YOUNG THE GIANT – “Crystalized” (December 16) (*)
It’s been another solid era for the California quintet, having recently seen the title track from Mind Over Matter peak in the top 20 on the Alternative chart. A clip for their third single from the set has been online for the better part of a year. After a series of station sponsored holiday concerts over the next two weeks, the group returns to the road in February.
