Boys Beyond The Band: Three Pop Players This Summer

If you know and love your boy bands, you’re aware that they’re striking it big around the world. From 5 Seconds Of Summer to One Direction to Rixton and beyond, the dudes are still doing it and making the girls swoon from coast to coast. However, going to radio over the next few weeks are a few singles from soloists shedding that sweet image for a more adult sound. Check ’em all out:

They've got the Drive.

They’ve got the Drive.

HEFFRON DRIVE – “Parallel”
Adds Date: May 6 —- Label: TOLBooth

In 2008, friends Kendall Schmidt and Dustin Belt, both living around the same area in Burbank, CA, formed this duo and started promoting their music via social media. Soon after, Schmidt was cast as Kendall Knight on the Nickelodeon series Big Time Rush, and this project was put on hold until the TV show ended production last year. Now, the performer has a release on his own label, TOLBooth Records, which recently picked up a handful of stations, including one in Las Vegas. Comparable to some of the recent singles out of the folk pop renaissance, including One Direction‘s “Story Of My Life”, “Parallel” lands in familiar territory, but is still a pleasant little ditty. Support from the BTR crowd should help this along.

ASHER MONROE featuring CHRIS BROWN – “Memory”
Adds Date: May 13 —- Label: D Empire

This 25-year-old performer from Virginia has been going at it for some time in the entertainment business, from roles on TV shows like Parenthood and The Mentalist to becoming a member in V Factory, a quintet that dented the CHR top 40 in the spring of 2009 with “Love Struck”. Lately, Monroe’s been seeing some action on the Dance Club Songs survey with two #10 singles in a row: “Here With You” and “Hush Hush”. Neither saw much crossover airplay in the process, so could a collaboration with one of the bad boys of R&B help him out? As far as his streak of Dance hits, the song landed at #5 last week, making it his biggest song to date. With over a million views to date, this could be a “Memory” worth remembering.

JESSE MCCARTNEY – “Superbad”
Adds Date: June 10 —- Label: EightOEight/INgrooves

Last year, you may have been grooving to this guy’s danceable number “Back Together”. It got a ton of attention over on satellite radio and picked up some spins in a few minor markets. However, for the former Dream Street vocalist, going the independent route hasn’t proven to be as popular on the charts as his music with the Mouse. It’s been three and a half years since McCartney last garnered a significant amount of CHR airplay with “Shake”, which cracked the top 20 during November of 2010. What was supposed to be his fourth studio album on Hollywood, Have It All, was shelved after many delays, but eventually leaked. Of all of his post-Disney material, this is the strongest yet. Let’s hope it gets a super boost.
