Chart Notes:

  • The lovely Passenger is once again in the driver’s seat this week for the second frame with “The Wrong Direction”, marking his 19th week at #1 during the calendar year 2013. Of course, this week marks a new chart year for me, so he’s starting it off right. The magic 2-0 mark is in his sights next week; let’s see if he can hold on or if The 1975 or the surging A Great Big World and One Direction lead him in a different “Direction”.
  • Look for songs by Bastille and The Fray to enter the top ten next week, at #12 and #11, respectively. “Of The Night” would be the British band’s second top ten hit following their #1 “Pompeii”, while “Love Don’t Die” could be the eighth for the American group, their last coming two years ago in the #5 single “Heartbeat”.
  • This year’s Christmas queen and newly pregnant Kelly Clarkson takes an eight notch leap from 29-21 with what looks like this year’s only holiday-themed release to chart, “Underneath The Tree”. Clarkson’s Wrapped In Red album should be certified Gold by the end of the season.
  • The Biggest Mover on the chart belongs to Christina Perri, up 38-29 with “Human”. It’s the first single from her second studio album, Head Or Heart, out in March. Last week marked another “Human” topping the charts in another era; that was by the Human League, who hit #1 on the Hot 100 on the chart dated November 22, 1986. (They fell to #2 this week back in ’86.) (View the song premiere post with lyrics.)
  • The only debut on this week’s survey comes from Australian quintet Boy & Bear, who enter at #40 with their first hit, “Southern Sun”. The band is signed to Nettwerk Records, which means the label holds both the top and bottom positions on the chart, the #1 spot obviously being held by Passenger. The band will be doing a small tour in Canada and the U.S. this upcoming spring. (Read my post on the single published this week.)
