SINGLE PREMIERE: Backstreet Boys – “In A World Like This” (+ Lyrics)

What a wonderful "World".

What a wonderful “World”.

They wished that they could give the world to you, but the “World” has changed a little bit since the Backstreet Boys first dominated the charts in the late 90’s. Music acts have come and gone, including a lot of their boy band counterparts. Music styles have changed, including the evolution of their own catalogue from bubblegum pop to R&B to pop/rock to dance and now back to just straight-up solid power pop. Last month, the group came out with what I thought was their first single from a new album, “Permanent Stain”, an uptempo electronic-pop track that they performed live and premiered of Good Morning America. However, it was never sent to radio or to any digital retailer, and just ended up as a teaser of what was to come. Now comes the actual first single from the project. It’s already been serviced to radio stations and has its sights on becoming the group’s first top 40 hit on the Hot 100 since 2005.

“In A World Like This” is the title track from the forthcoming album by the band, due on July 30. It’s their first album for Sony BMG after longtime home Jive Records was dissolved into RCA in the fall of 2011. It’s also the band’s first album with all five members in eight years after Kevin Richardson was absent on albums Unbreakable (2007) and This Is Us (2009). It’s their best single in years, at least for me since “Inconsolable” in 2007, displaying their crisp and clear vocals against a little guitar and drum. Even if you’ve given up on the Boys for still trying with material that isn’t going to get the same amount of attention as the prior stuff, this is pretty much their classic sound with a fuller arrangement. They’re in control of their own material now and their work has paid off. Inevitably, this is probably going to get some comparisons to some of the newer boy bands like One Direction with the emphasis on the repetitive end-lines and a prominent hook, but cut them some slack; they’ve tried really hard to maintain their fan base and this could get them some return listeners.

It may be an uphill battle for the Backstreet Boys to return to their glory days on the national charts, but they’re doing what they want, and, forgive the pun, “I want it that way.” Let me know what you think of the song below or on Twitter: @AdamFSoybel.

“IN A WORLD LIKE THIS”

[Verse 1]
You’ve got me wide open, wide open
Now I’m yours
You found me heartbroken, heartbroken
On the floor
Became my salvation, salvation
Through the war, yeah
You got me wide open, wide open
Now I’m sure

[Chorus]
In a world like this where some back down
I, I, know we’re gonna make it
In a time like this where love comes ’round
I, I, know we’re gonna take it
In a world like this where people fall apart
In a time like this where nothing comes from the heart
In a world like this, I’ve got you

[Verse 2]
And now I’m free falling, free falling
In your eyes
You got me still calling, still calling
No surprise
I never knew I could love ’til the
End of time, yeah
And now I’m free falling, free falling
By your side

[Chorus]
In a world like this where some back down
I, I, know we’re gonna make it
In a time like this where love comes ’round
I, I, know we’re gonna take it
In a world like this where people fall apart
In a time like this where nothing comes from the heart
In a world like this, I’ve got you

Ah, yeah
Ah, In a world like this

[Middle 8]
You got me wide open, wide open, yeah
And now I’m free falling, free falling
Hey, yeah, yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
In a world like, in a world like
‘Cause I got you in a world like this

[Chorus]
In a world like this where some back down
I, I, know we’re gonna make it
In a time like this where love comes ’round
I, I, know we’re gonna take it
In a world like this where people fall apart
In a time like this where nothing comes from the heart
In a world like this, I’ve got you
